SACRAMENTO -- With its schedule battered by Mother Nature over the last week, the Sacramento State baseball team continues to find opportunities for competition, adding a game against Causeway rival UC Davis on Monday (March 6) at 4 p.m. at John Smith Field.
"Student-athletes come to Sacramento State knowing we will do everything we can to play all 56 games that the NCAA allows," Head Coach Reggie Christiansen said. "They have worked hard since fall practice began on August 28th and the season is about them playing the games. I appreciate (UC Davis Head Coach) Tommy Nicholson's willingness to add this game. I know the Aggies also are looking to play all 56 games. Our kids want to play and so do theirs."
The addition of the Aggies on March 6 creates a gauntlet for the Hornets who, beginning with Wednesday's (March 1) scheduled game against Nevada at home, will play a marathon total of 12 games in 11 days. Following the game against the Wolf Pack, Sacramento State heads to Southern California to take on USC (March 3), nationally ranked UCLA (March 4), and Tulane (March 5) in the round-robin SoCal Baseball Classic co-hosted by the Trojans and Bruins.
After that, the Hornets face UC Davis at John Smith Field on March 6 and in Davis on March 7, before welcoming San Francisco a day later and closing out the week with a four-game series against Central Michigan. The series with the Chippewas begins with single games on March 9 and 10, followed by a doubleheader on March 11. The Chippewas were NCAA Regional participants a season ago and finished No. 71 in the final RPI.
As a result of adding the home game against UC Davis next week, the April 11 clash between the two programs will now be played at Dobbins Stadium in Davis, Calif.
Sacramento State stands at 5-1 overall on the year after taking 3-of-4 from North Dakota State and sweeping a doubleheader from St. Thomas after the first and final games of that series were canceled due to weather.
