POWELL’S TRIPLE-DOUBLE HIGHLIGHTS MEN’S HOOPS 100-45 WIN OVER BETHESDA

SACRAMENTO -- Sophomore Duncan Powell registered the second triple-double in program history (13 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists) to help lead Sacramento State to a 100-45 victory over Bethesda on Thursday afternoon at the Nest.

Powell joins Marcus Graves as the only two Hornets in school history (1948-pres.) to record a triple-double. Graves had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists at home vs. Simpson in 2018. Powell was the catalyst for a balanced Hornet attack that featured seven players scoring in double figures.

That included Zee Hamoda (14), Powell (13), Alex Kovatchev (12), Austin Patterson (12), Jacob Holt (11), Akol Mawein (10) and Bowyn Beatty (10). Both Hamoda and Patterson shot 4-for-8 from the 3-point line as the Hornets striped 13 makes from distance (38%, 13-for-34). After falling behind early, 2-0, Sacramento State went on a 36-2 run and never looked back. The Hornets led by as many as 59 points before settling for the 55-point victory.

Sacramento State has now registered triple digits in points multiple times this year for the first time since the 2006-07 team accomplished the feat on three occasions.

The Hornets shot 51% (35-69) from the field while limiting Bethesda to 27% (15-56). Sacramento State had huge advantages in rebounds (58-26), second chance points (27-3), points in the paint (44-14), bench points (49-9), and points off turnovers (26-10). The Hornets led at the half, 54-13, and the 13 points were the fewest allowed in a half since Simpson's nine second half points in 2019. Twenty Hornet rebounds came on the offensive glass.

This afternoon marked the finale of a season-long three-game homestand for Sacramento State, and the team's final tuneup before Big Sky Conference play begins on Dec. 28. The Hornets (3-8) have played just four games at home this season, and improved to 2-2 at the Nest.

The Hornets were playing Bethesda for just the second time ever, and improved to 2-0 against the Lion Angels. Bethesda is based in Anaheim, and is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). The Lion Angels have now played six Div. I opponents this season, including San Francisco, San Jose State, UC Riverside, CSUN and UC Santa Barbara.

Since joining the Div. I ranks in 1991, Sacramento State is now 51-3 when playing a non-Div. I opponent. If you exclude three losses to UC Davis between 1991 and 2004 when the Aggies were Div. II members, Sacramento State is 48-0 against non-Div. I opposition.

For Powell, the 15 rebounds matched a career high and the 10 assists set a career best. The 15 rebounds are the most by a Hornet this season, and tied for the 10th best mark in Sacramento State's Div. I era. Powell already had his triple-double with 4:10 left in the game, and finished with a massive +56 in plus/minus.

All 11 Hornets that appeared in today's game cracked the scoring column, including Bailey Nunn (7), Brandon Betson (6), Michael Wilson (3) and Emil Skytta (2). The Hornets finished with 27 assists, including multiple helpers from seven different players. Mawein was second on the team with four assists. Six Hornets had at least five rebounds, including eight from Holt. Both Kovatchev and Beatty had a pair of blocked shots. Every Hornet played more than 10 minutes.

The Hornets will now turn their attention to Big Sky play, which begins next week with road matchups at Idaho (Dec. 28) and Eastern Washington (Dec. 30).
