VOLLEYBALL INCHES WITHIN ONE WIN OF A BIG SKY TITLE AFTER SWEEP OF IDAHO

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State inched closer to a Big Sky Conference title after sweeping Idaho, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-20), on Senior Night in front of a near sellout crowd at the Nest.

Sacramento State won its seventh straight, and moved to within one win of a Big Sky Conference regular season championship. The Hornets improved to 19-8 overall and 12-1 in conference. With just three matches left in the regular season (all on the road), Sacramento State needs to win just once to claim at least a share of the Big Sky regular season title.

At 12-1, the Hornets have matched their best 13-game mark since joining the Big Sky in 1996. The 2017, 2006, 2005 and 1998 team all finished their seasons with one conference loss. In addition, Sacramento State is one win shy of reaching 20 victories. The last Hornet squad to accomplish that feat was the 2017 team (26-10, 15-1).

Sacramento State, which honored five seniors prior to this evening's match, will play three straight road matches to close the regular season. Those will come at Portland State, Montana State and Montana. The only team that poses a threat to Sacramento State's potential regular season championship is Weber State (9-3) which sits two games back of the Hornets. The Wildcats defeated Idaho State tonight at home.

Sacramento State was playing its final home match, and finished 12-4 in the Nest, including 7-1 against conference competition.

Prior to the contest, the Hornets honored one of the better senior classes in school history. A list that includes Caty Cordano, Kalani Hayes, Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin, Karlee Soderberg and Caitlin Volkmann.

Each of those five seniors contributed to tonight's victory, including Kamba-Griffin who had a career-high 12 kills to go with seven blocks and a .529 hitting percentage. Hayes had five kills, a .400 hitting percentage and six blocks, Soderberg had a match-best seven blocks, Volkmann posted three kills, a pair of digs and a block, and Cordano had two aces and three digs.

Outside hitter Bridgette Smith led all players with 11 kills to go with 11 digs and three blocks. The double-double was her ninth of the season. Setter Kate Doorn had 20 assists and three digs, and Hailey Plugge posted 12 assists and six digs. Ellie Tisko chipped in four kills, and Abbey Kadillak four digs.

The Hornets are back in action on Friday on the road at Portland State. First serve is 7 p.m., and the match will stream live on ESPN+.
