MEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO NO. 13 CAL STATE FULLERTON

SACRAMENTO — Visiting Cal State Fullerton put home the only goal of the match in the 24th minute and then made it stand as the No. 13-ranked Titans eked past host Sacramento State by a 1-0 score on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.

The Hornets fell to 3-8-4 overall and 0-2-4 in Big West Conference play, while league-leading Cal State Fullerton avenged its first conference loss of the year earlier in the week to improve to 11-3-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big West.

Sacramento State held a 17-13 advantage in shots, including a 5-4 lead in shots on frame, setting a new season high in shot attempts and its highest single-match total since attempting 20 shots at CSU Bakersfield on Sept. 28 of last season. The Hornets' 10 corner kicks were also a season high, posting their highest total since taking 11 corners at UNLV on Sept. 18 of last year.

Seniors Austin Wehner and Genaro Alfaro each finished with a match-high four attempts for Sacramento State, standing as two of nine different players to attempt a shot on the day. Goalkeeper Mac Learned finished with three saves in the contest.

The only goal of the match came off the foot of Erick Serrano, who flicked in a pass from Roberto Ordonez at the top of the six for the 1-0 lead.

After taking four of the first five shots in the match, Alfaro was the first to test Fullerton keeper Tetsuya Kadono in the 28th minute, and Zac Giles made Kadono make another stop just before the end of the first half. Kadono added three more saves in the second period, turning away Alfaro in the 76th minute, Alejandro Padilla in the 85th minute, and Wehner with less than a minute to play.

Sacramento State next takes the field on the road on Wednesday (Oct. 18) at UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m., before returning home to host UC Irvine on Saturday (Oct. 21), honoring its senior class prior to kick-off against the Anteaters.
