BASEBALL HOSTS 11TH ANNUAL DIAMOND DINNER FUNDRAISER

Dinner features the induction of the 2012 Hornet team into the program's Hall of Fame and the retirement of Rhys Hoskins' jersey.

SACRAMENTO -- Fans and supporters of the Sacramento State baseball program are invited to attend the program's 11th annual Diamond Dinner fundraiser to be held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Sacramento on Feb. 3, 2023, at 5:30 p.m.

The dinner will feature the induction of the 2012 Sacramento State team into the program's Hall of Fame, while former Hornet standout Rhys Hoskins will have his jersey retired. Tickets for the event are $100 per person or $750 for a table for 10 and those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP by Jan. 15.

Finishing the year with 31 wins and claiming a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular season title, the 2012 Sacramento State squad jumpstarted a run that has seen the program post 30-or-more victories in each of the last 10 full seasons — the only Division I program in the state of California to accomplish that feat.

That year's roster featured nine student-athletes who would go on to be selected in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft or sign a free agent contract: R.J. Davis (20th round, Tampa Bay, 2012), Derrick Chung (31st round, Toronto, 2012), Scotty Burcham (25th round, Colorado, 2015), Tanner Mendonca (17th round, Minnesota, 2013), Rhys Hoskins (5th round, 2014), Andrew Ayers (30th round, Kansas City, 2013), Ty Nichols (free agent, Tampa Bay, 2015), Brennan Leitao (26th round, St. Louis, 2015), and Justin Higley (13th round, Oakland, 2013).

The award haul was huge as Head Coach Reggie Christiansen was named the WAC Coach of the Year, Ayers was named the WAC Player of the Year, and Hoskins was named the WAC Freshman of the Year, while Ayers, Chung, and Higley were named to the All-WAC first team. Trevor Paine, Dallas Chadwick, and Hoskins picked up all-league second-team honors while four Hornets earned WAC All-Tournament laurels.

Speaking of Hoskins, the former Hornet will become the fourth member of the Sacramento State baseball program — and only the second player — to have his jersey retired during the event, joining former head coaches John Smith (No. 22) and Cal Boyes (No. 37), as well as student-athlete Vince Beall (No. 23). Hoskins wrapped up his sixth season in the Major Leagues in 2022, helping Philadelphia to a National League pennant and becoming the first Sacramento State player to appear in the World Series.

A letter winner for the Hornets from 2012-14, Hoskins hit .246 with 30 home runs and 79 RBI for the Phillies during their run, scoring 81 runs and collecting 33 doubles. He finished the 2022 season with a career-high 145 hits in 156 games, while slugging six home runs and driving in 12 runs during the playoffs.

As a Hornet, Hoskins was a Louisville Slugger All-American and the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a junior, hitting .319 with a league-best 12 home runs, 18 doubles, and 53 RBI that year. He helped lead the Hornets to a 40-24 overall record, a WAC Tournament title, and the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in its Division I history.

As a freshman, Hoskins hit a team-high .353 with 44 runs scored and 53 RBI while slugging 10 home runs during Sacramento State's run to a share of the league's regular-season title. He continues to rank tied for fourth on the school's career list for doubles ( 49), is ninth in home runs (25), and tied for seventh in RBI (128).
