Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Gunner Gouldsmith finished 2-for-3 while Carson Blatnick and Jeffery Heard each added hits on the night, but host Sacramento State could not hold back a hot-hitting Fresno State squad on Tuesday, falling to the Bulldogs, 19-0, at John Smith Field in a battle of former Western Athletic Conference rivals.
The Hornets fell to 15-17 overall on the season and will host conference foe Seattle U for three games beginning Thursday (April 14) and running through Saturday (April 16).
Gouldsmith collected his fifth multi-hit game of the season, lacing a single to left in the third and dropping a single into right in the sixth. Heard, meanwhile reached on a double down the left field line in the fifth while Blatnick singled in the sixth for the only Hornet hits on the night.
The two teams were scoreless until the third when Andrew Kachel launched a home run over the wall in right centerfield for the 1-0 Bulldog lead. That opened the floodgates for Fresno State, which scored at least one run in each of the next five innings, finishing the night slugging eight home runs -- including three players with two apiece -- and collecting 25 total hits en route to the win.
Trevor Garcia (3-0) was credited with the win pitching four shutout innings while allowing a hit and striking out five, while four relievers combined to surrender just three hits and strikeout seven over the final five innings.
Freshman left-hander Noah Lucchesi (0-5) suffered the loss for Sacramento State, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out a pair while pitching into the fifth.
First pitch for the first two games of the series between the Hornets and the Redhawks is scheduled for 6 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday, with a Noon start scheduled for Saturday's finale.
