SOFTBALL BEATS DIXIE STATE, PEREZ WINS 200TH CAREER GAME

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State's Lexie Webb cranked her sixth home run of the season to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, and head coach Lori Perez earned her 200th career win in the Hornets' 2-1 victory over Dixie State on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

Today's victory opened the three-day Capital Classic, a three-team tourney the Hornets are co-hosting with UC Davis. Sacramento State will play twice more tomorrow in Davis, before returning home to play a pair on Sunday. Sacramento State (7-8) has now won four of its last five games.

The win was the 200th in the career of head coach Lori Perez, who took over the program prior to the 2014 season. The Petaluma, Calif., native has over 21 years of experience at Sacramento State, including four seasons as a player (1999-02), nine years as an assistant coach (2005-13), and eight seasons as the head coach (2014-pres.).

Webb's homer proved to be the game-winning hit as she sent the first pitch of the at-bat well over the center field fence in the sixth inning. That gave Sacramento State a 2-1 lead, and Marissa Bertuccio tossed a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to put the Hornets in the win column. Webb continues to impress in her first season with the Hornets after transferring from Fresno State, as she now has team highs in home runs (6) and RBIs (13) while batting .360. Webb has started in all 15 games, and has hit safely in 13 of those contests.

Bertuccio (4-1) has been dominant in the early going, and that continued today as she tossed her fourth complete game while allowing one run and five hits over seven innings. The right-hander also struck out a season-high nine batters and threw 107 pitches to earn her fourth win of the season.

Both teams scored a run in the third inning, and the game remained in a 1-1 deadlock until Webb's blast in the sixth. The third inning run came on a two-out, two-run single from Samantha Parish which scored Lewa Day from third base.

Dixie State (5-9) starter Kate Dolinski (2-3) was the tough luck losing pitcher, allowing just three hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings. She threw 79 pitches.

Of Sacramento State's three hits, one came from Day, Parish and Webb.

Sacramento State will play twice in Davis tomorrow against Dixie State (11:30 a.m.) and UC Davis (2 p.m.). On Sunday, the Hornets return home to play both teams again. The Capital Classic is a three-team round robin.
