SOFTBALL OVERPOWERS NORTH DAKOTA IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State's potent offensive attack combined for 26 runs and 25 hits over two games on the way to a pair of mercy rule victories over North Dakota on Thursday at Shea Stadium. Both games ended in five innings as the Hornets won Game 1 by a 12-0 score and took the nightcap, 14-3.

The scoring barrage included an eight-run first inning in Game 1, and a school-record 11 runs in the second inning of Game 2. The Hornets set their season high in runs (12) in the first game, only to improve upon that mark in the second game (14). The 13 hits in Game 2 matched a season best. In fact, all nine Hornet starters in the nightcap had at least one hit, and scored at least one run.

Sacramento State's offense hit .543 (25-for-46) with 26 runs, four doubles, two homers and 24 RBIs over two games. The two bombs came from Carley Morfey (2) and Lexie Webb (11). Only four players in the country have more homers than Webb, as her 11 round trippers are just seven shy of the program single-season record of 18, set by Suzy Brookshire in 2018.

The wins allowed Sacramento State to improve to 14-12 and the Hornets have now won 11 of their last 16 games. In addition, the Hornets improved to 7-2 at home. North Dakota, which split a doubleheader at CSU Bakersfield yesterday, dropped to 9-19.

Both games were over early as Sacramento State had an 8-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1, and a 13-3 lead after the second inning of Game 2. The Hornets sent 11 batters to the plate in the eight-run inning, and 14 batters to the plate in the 11-run frame.

The pitching wasn't bad either as Marissa Bertuccio (9-3) got the win in the opener, allowing just two hits with no runs in four innings. Webb (3-6) got the win in the second game, allowing five hits and three runs in four innings. Alyssa Nunez and Caroline Evans pitched the final inning of both games, respectively.

Carley Morfey had a huge day, combining to go 5-for-5 with four runs, two doubles, a homer, 10 total bases and five RBIs. Lewa Day was 4-for-6 with four runs, a double and four RBIs, and both Samantha Paris and Alondra Mejia had three hits, three runs and an RBI. Evans was 2-for-2 with a walk, run scored and an RBI. Kennedy Echols also finished with a pair of hits.

Sacramento State will now play three games in Stockton over the next two days, beginning on Friday vs. Marist at 12:15 p.m., and Iowa State at 4:45 p.m. On Saturday, the Hornets play at Pacific at 4:45 p.m.
