WEBB EXTENDS HITTING STREAK TO EIGHT GAMES, BUT SOFTBALL FALLS AT UC SAN DIEGO

Box Score

SAN DIEGO -- Sacramento State received multiple-hit games from Samantha Parish, Lexie Webb and Alondra Mejia, but fell at UC San Diego, 6-1, in the final round of the La Jolla Softball Invitational on Sunday morning.

The Hornets completed the three-day tourney, hosted by UC San Diego, with a 1-4 record. Sacramento State split two games against UC San Diego, dropped a pair to Utah, and lost one game to Saint Mary's.

Webb went 2-for-3 this morning to extend her hitting streak to eight games. After failing to pick up a hit in the season opener, the Fresno State transfer has hit safely in eight straight games, and leads the Hornets with a .400 batting average. She also owns a .767 slugging percentage, and has struck out just twice in 30 at-bats.

Parish has now hit safely in five games to lift her batting average to .357. During that five-gamer, two games have been of the multiple-hit variety. That included today when the trio of Parish, Webb and Mejia combined to account for six of the Hornets' eight hits. The other Sacramento State knocks came from Carley Morfey and Kennedy Echols. Morfey's hit was an RBI-double in the sixth inning which drove home pinch runner Nevaeh Pinon.

Alyssa Nunez (0-1) started in the circle and lasted 2.1 innings while getting the loss. Marissa Bertuccio threw the final 4.2 innings of relief, allowing just four hits and two earned runs with no walks and four strikeouts.

The Tritons (5-5) scored runs in the third (3), fifth (1) and seventh (2) innings. Sacramento State (3-6 overall) stranded seven runners on base, including multiple runners aboard in the third, fourth and fifth frames.

The Hornets will be in the Bay Area next Friday-Sunday where they will take part in the Silicon Valley Classic. During the three-day tournament, Sacramento State will play five times, beginning on Friday in Santa Clara against Utah State (1 p.m.) and Santa Clara (3:30 p.m.). The Hornets will also play Cal Poly and San Jose State during the tournament.
