BERTUCCIO THROWS SHUTOUT, EVANS AND WEBB HOMER IN SOFTBALL'S 4-0 WIN OVER SANTA CLARA

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Marissa Bertuccio tossed a four-hit shutout, and both Caroline Evans and Lexie Webb hit two-run homers, as the Hornets defeated Santa Clara, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The game marked the finale of the three-day, season-opening NorCal Kickoff. Sacramento State hosted eight games over three days, and the Hornets played in four of those contests. Sacramento State finished with a 2-2 record, with both losses coming by one run to San Jose State. Both victories came over the Broncos.

Today's home run from Evans came in her first collegiate plate appearance. The true freshman from San Leandro pounced on a 3-2 pitch and went the opposite way for a two-run blast over the left-center field fence. Evans finished the day 2-for-2 with a walk, run scored and two RBIs.

Bertuccio (1-1) was dominant in the circle, allowing just four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. She needed just 92 pitchers in the complete-game effort, and three of the four hits allowed were singles. In 12.0 innings this season, she now has a 1.17 ERA and opponents are hitting just .217 when she is in the circle.

Webb, a sophomore transfer from Fresno State, homered for the second straight game. Lewa Day opened the third inning with a sharply hit single, and Webb eventually followed by drilling a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence.

Both Webb and Evans finished with two hits, and Day added the Hornets' other knock.

During the tournament, the lethal combination of Day (.444, 2 HR) and Webb (.385, 2 2 HR) combined to go 9-for-22 with six runs, four homers, five walks and five RBIs. Both players have hit safely in three straight games.

The Hornets will play next week at a tournament hosted by UC San Diego on Friday-Sunday. The Hornets will play five times over three days, beginning on Friday with games vs. Utah (1:30 p.m.) and UC San Diego (7:00 p.m.).
