Box Score 2 SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State split a pair of games on the second day of the NorCal Kickoff on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. After winning the first game over Santa Clara, 6-1, the Hornets dropped the nightcap to San Jose State by a 6-5 score.
The NorCal Kickoff is a three-day, season-opening tournament co-hosted with UC Davis. Sacramento State is hosting eight games over three days, and playing in four of those contests. The team is 1-2 at the tournament, which included a 2-1 loss to San Jose State on Friday afternoon. The Hornets conclude the tournament tomorrow morning against Santa Clara at 11:30 a.m.
Sacramento State combined for 19 hits in today's games, and hit .322 as a team with three homers and 11 RBIs. Two of those home runs came from Lewa Day, and one from Lexie Webb. All three of the round trippers were no doubters, well beyond the outfield wall
Four Sacramento State pitchers appeared in today's games, headlined by Webb, who was brilliant in the 6-1 victory over Santa Clara. The Fresno State transfer threw a complete game against the Broncos, allowing three hits and one run with no walks and five strikeouts over seven innings. Caroline Evans (3.0 ip), Kelsey Alcantara (2.0 ip) and Alyssa Nunez (2.0 ip) all pitched in the game against San Jose State.
One area the Hornets struggled was defense, where the team combined for five errors. That included four errors against San Jose State in a game where defense was a major factor in the Spartans' one-run victory.
Offensively, Day homered in both games, and finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with two homers, three walks (two intentional) and two RBIs. She batted leadoff in the second game, and after Day homered in her first at-bat, she was walked by Spartan pitchers in each of her next three plate appearances.
Carley Morfey was 4-for-7 with two runs and three RBIs. All three of those RBIs came in the Santa Clara game where she finished 3-for-3 with a double. Webb was 3-for-7 with two runs, a homer and an RBI. Webb and the Hornets were unlucky in the sixth inning of the San Jose State game. With Sacramento State trailing, 6-5, and the bases loaded, Webb hit a rocket right to the left fielder for the final out of the inning. If the ball was hit even five feet in either direction of the left fielder, Sacramento State would have scored at least a pair of runs.
Other Hornets to finish the day with multiple hits included Samantha Parish (2), Alexis Parish (2) and Nikki Barboza (2).
