SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Six Sacramento State football players garnered All-American honors from Stats Perform, it was announced today. The list is comprised of nickelback
Marte Mapu who was named to the first team, running back
Cameron Skattebo, tight end
Marshel Martin and kicker
Kyle Sentkowski who were selected to the second team, quarterback
Asher O'Hara was the all-purpose choice on the third team and center
Nathan Mejia who was named to the Freshman All-America team.
Mapu joins linebacker Darnell Sankey (2014) as the only Hornet defensive players to earn first team honors from Stats Perform (formerly The Sports Network). The senior started all 13 games for Sacramento State and ranked second on the team with 76 total tackles, including 6.5 for loss. Mapu added two interceptions, had four pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and forced a fumble. The Hawthorne, Calif., native was credited with at least three tackles in all 13 games and had five or more in nine contests. He earned first team all-Big Sky Conference honors and was also named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year. Mapu was also recognized as a first team All-American by the Associated Press.
Skattebo was the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year and a first team all-league choice. The sophomore running back rushed for 1,373 yards and seven touchdowns and also caught 31 passes for 371 yards and three scores. Skattebo averaged 7.01 yards per carry which placed him second all-time at Sacramento State and was the best mark in the school's Div. I era. He ran for at least 100 yards in eight games, including a career high 201 at Eastern Washington. Skattebo also scored on a kickoff return and threw a touchdown pass against UIW to account for 12 touchdowns the season.
Martin led the team with 65 receptions for 879 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns to set career highs in each category. His 12 touchdowns tied him for fourth in school single-season history. He also rushed for a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a score to give him 84 points on the season. Martin made a statement during the team's two FCS Playoff games, catching 22 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. The Vallejo, Calif., native's, 12 receptions against UIW set a school postseason record and tied him for fifth in all games. He was also named to the all-Big Sky first team for the second year in a row.
Sentkowski was recognized by Stats Perform for the second consecutive season. The senior made 17-of-20 field goals and did not miss any of his school-record 71 PATs during the 2022 season. He made at least one field goal in 11 of the team's 13 games and had multiple field goals in five contests. Sentkowski ended the year by making 17 of his final 18 attempts. He leaves Sacramento State ranked second in school history with 38 career field goals and 115 career PATs. Sentkowski is also third among kickers and fifth overall with 229 career points.
O'Hara accounted for 1,180 yards of total offense and 30 touchdowns during the season. The quarterback ranked second on the team with 937 rushing yards and scored a team-best 19 rushing touchdowns. He found the end zone in all 11 regular season games and rushed for multiple TDs six times, including three at Eastern Washington. His 19 rushing scores are tied for second place in school single-season history, trailing only Charles Roberts (22). O'Hara also completed 81-of-111 passes for 873 yards and 11 touchdowns. He threw seven touchdowns over the final six games of the season, including three in the FCS Playoffs. His completion percentage of .730 set the school single-season record while pass efficiency of 171.7 ranks second.
Mejia brought home his second Freshman All-America honor of the postseason. The redshirt freshman started all 13 games at center and was part of an offensive line which led the way for a school-record 3,358 rushing yards. Mejia was also named second team all-Big Sky following the season.
