Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Sacramento State opened its final weekend of the season with a win Friday afternoon at Portland State, defeating the Vikings, 1-0, at Hillsboro Stadium.
Friday afternoon's matchup between the Hornets (2-4-4, 1-4-2 Big Sky) and Vikings (0-7, 0-7) was the penultimate match of the year for both squads, as neither will qualify for the Big Sky's 2021 Soccer Championship, which starts next week in Ogden, Utah.
Despite that, Sacramento State came out with something to prove, dominating possession and just about every stat on the box score.
The Hornets possessed the ball for 62% of the first half while outshooting the Vikings, 10-5. Sacramento State had an incredible five corner kicks in the first half and where whistled for just three fouls.
Sacramento State kept the pressure up in the second half and were ultimately rewarded with a 51' minute goal off the foot of forward Tiffany Miras.
After a big boot by Julia Herrera ricocheted off the cross bar, Miras was there to play the rebound, beating her defender and driving the ball into the back of the net from just outside the six-yard box.
The goal was Miras's first of the season and she became the sixth different Hornet to score a goal this year. The strike snapped a three-match scoreless streak for the Hornets.
Up 1-0, the Hornets continued to press the attack, and by the end of the match, Sacramento State had outshot Portland State, 15-9, while out possessing the Vikings by the same, 62-38% margin.
Jordan Goularte led the offense with three shot attempts, though was unable to place any on goal. Four Hornets finished with two shots, including Julia Herrera, who palced both on frame, a game-high on Friday. Four more Hornets finished with one shot.
In goal on Friday, Aaliyah Fesili made two saves while facing just nine total shots. The nine shots against were the fewest taken by an opponent against the Hornets this season.
Sacramento State and Portland State will close out the regular season on Sunday at Hillsboro Stadium in Portland, Oregon. Kickoff for Sunday's season finale is set for 11:30 am and the game will against stream live on WatchBigSky.com.
