Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho. – Sacramento State took the field Sunday looking to avenge Friday night's heartbreaking loss against the Idaho Vandals, but the Hornet offense was unable to deliver as the team fell, 2-0, in Moscow.
Sunday was the first time that Sacramento State (1-2-4, 0-2-2 Big Sky) has lost back-to-back matches in nearly three years. The last time the Hornets dropped two in a row was October 19 and 21 of 2018, the final two games of that season.
Idaho (4-4-0, 4-2-0 Big Sky) has now won four straight after starting Big Sky Conference play 0-2.
As they did on Friday, the Vandals found the back of the net first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Margo Schoesler, who scored a goal in Friday's match, snuck one into the lower left corner past Sacramento State keeper Aaliyah Fesili.
The Vandals doubled their lead in the 77th minute, this time off the foot of Sidney Schmidt, her first score of the season.
Although Idaho scored two on Sunday, Sacramento State keeper Aaliyah Fesili still made six saves as she faced down 13 total shots. Eight of those shots were on target. Fesili, a two-time Defensive Player of the Week selection this season, has six or more saves in all seven matches this season.
The Hornets and Vandals were even in shots, 4-4, as the two teams went into halftime. Idaho came out the aggressor in the second half, outshooting Sacramento State, 9-5, in the final 45 minutes.
In addition, Idaho held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3, overall, and 4-1 in the second half.
Sacramento State continued to play its physical brand of defense, but was met with many whistles and three yellow cards on Sunday. The Hornets were called for 14 fouls compared to Idaho's nine. Julia Herrera, Samantha Craig, and Shylah Soon were all shown the yellow.
With the loss, Sacramento State is now 0-2-2 in conference play and is fourth in the Big Sky's North Division. The top two teams from each the North Division and South Division will advance to the 2019 Big Sky Soccer Championship in Ogden, Utah in May.
Up next for the Hornets are back-to-back matches at home at Hornet Field. Sacramento State will host Montana this coming Friday, April 2 and Sunday, April 4.
