Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's soccer team entered play Friday night looking for their first 5-3 start since the 2007 season but instead fell to 4-4 after a tough 1-0 loss to Cal Poly at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The Hornets fell behind early as Cal Poly's Megan Demijohn scored her first goal of the season after receiving a pass in the box from Georgina Stiegeler. The game's lone goal came in the 10th minute of play.
Despite the early deficit, Sacramento State pushed the attack, taking 10 shots in the first half, although only two were on goal. They managed just four shots (two on goal) in the second half. Overall, the Hornets outshot Cal Poly 14-13.
Three of those 14 came from Kayla Collins, who now leads the team with 20 shot attempts this season. Bonnie Ford, Caitlin Prothe, Andrea Boehm, and Ariana Nino each had two shots.
Sacramento State's best chance at tying the game came in the final minute when the Hornets were able to get the ball behind the Mustang back line and create a 1-on-1 opportunity. However, the shot attempt missed to the outside of the left post.
The contest featured 17 total fouls (seven by the Hornets, 10 by Cal Poly) but included just one yellow card (Cal Poly's Ashley Kirchick).
Sacramento State will next play at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at 1 p.m. The team does not return home until Friday, September 29 to host North Dakota.
