SOFTBALL DROPS FRESNO STATE INVITE OPENER TO 25TH-RANKED BYU

FRESNO, Calif. -- Sacramento State freshman Danielle Sperry allowed just one unearned run in four innings of work against the nation's 25th-ranked team, but the Hornets fell to BYU, 7-1, in the first round of the Fresno State Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The Hornets, who will play four more times at the three-day event, dropped to 6-8-1 with the loss, The four-team tournament consists of the Hornets, BYU (12-6), Oregon State (13-5) and host Fresno State (13-8). BYU is currently ranked 25th in the nation in the NFCA top 25 coaches poll while Oregon State is receiving votes.

Sperry has now thrown 16 straight innings without allowing an earned run, a streak that spans five appearances. Sacramento State had just five hits in today's game against BYU's Arissa Paulson with Jessica Ravetti and Zamari Hinton both going 2-for-3. Ravetti drove in the Hornets' only run, a two-out, RBI-single scoring Suzy Brookshire from in the sixth inning. Hinton improved her hitting streak to six games, the longest by a Sacramento State player this season. Ravetti now has a four-game hitting streak.

BYU scored once in the first inning and five more times in the second off Hornet starter Celina Matthias. The Cougars had six of their 11 hits in the first two innings, including a home run in the first by leadoff hitter Rylee Jensen. In the second inning, BYU sent nine batters to the plate, tallying five runs on five hits. The big blow was a two-out, three-run double from Libby Sugg that gave the Cougars a 6-0 lead.

Sacramento State cut the deficit to 6-1 with the Ravetti RBI-single in the top of the sixth, but BYU scored in the bottom half of the inning via error, wild pitch and RBI-double from Ashley Thompson.

Matthias (3-4) took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs with three strikeouts over two innings. Sperry threw the final four innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run to go along with three strikeouts. Paulson (1-2) got the win for BYU, allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts over seven innings.

Besides Ravetti and Hinton, the only other Hornet to get a hit was Shelby Johnston (1-of-2 with a walk). Sydney Rasmussen drew a seventh inning walk, and has now reached base safely via hit and/or walk in 12 straight games.
