WOMEN'S SOCCER OUTLASTED BY SAINT MARY'S 2-1

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State took an early lead on a goal from junior Andrea Boehm in the 11th minute but Saint Mary's came back with two goals in the second half and held the Hornets to just four total shots in the game to pick up a 2-1 win on Sunday at Hornet Field.

All three shots on goal in the game were scores. Saint Mary's (2-7-1) had an 11-4 overall shot advantage in a defensive struggle that was played in large part in the midfield as Sacramento State (2-4-2) was unable to generate many good scoring chances.

The Hornets had just one shot in the second half and could not put a try on frame. After Boehm's early goal Saint Mary's held Sacramento State to just three shots for the remainder of the contest. The Gaels had just two shots on goal themselves but made them both count.

Boehm picked up her second goal of the season and gave the Hornets the lead in the 11th minute as sophomore Caitlin Prothe had a break to the top of the box and found her for a low finish to the far post. The goal tied Boehm with junior Kayla Collins for the team lead with two goals this season.

Sacramento State did not permit a Saint Mary's shot on goal over the first half, but the Gaels started to create some pressure late in the period and finished the half with six total shots. Early in the second half, in the 55th minute, Collins lofted a shot from the top of the box that hit the Saint Mary's crossbar and deflected out of play.

The Gaels were able to tie the game in the 68th minute after goalkeeper Julia McDonald caught a pass attempt. The Saint Mary's keeper took a quick drop kick from the top of her box and found teammate Hannah Diaz for a break on the Hornet goal. Goalkeeper Destiny Butcher and a defender met Diaz 15 yards out but she was able to spin free and put the ball off the left goal post and in.

Less than nine minutes later Diaz got free again off a lead pass from Jasmine Edwards. The Saint Mary's forward outran two defenders on a break to the left of the Hornet goal and beat Butcher with a low shot to the far post for her second goal of the game and third goal this season.

Just one shot, a miss high by the Gaels in the 79th minute, was recorded over the remaining 14 minutes of the game. Diaz led all players with five shots in the game while Collins was the only Hornet to tally multiple shot attempts. Corner kicks were 5-2 in favor of Saint Mary's, which was called offside eight times in the game.

The Hornets turn their sights to the start of the Big Sky Conference season. Sacramento State opens conference play on the road next week, playing at Southern Utah on Friday and Northern Arizona next Sunday.
