GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four will each compete in grand finals tomorrow morning after finishing the first day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships Saturday at Lake Natoma.
Due to extreme wind conditions reaching 15-25 miles per hour in the morning, all races scheduled after 12:40 p.m. were canceled including the varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight races.
Officials announced canceling all afternoon races as a safety procedure after observing that coxswains were having difficulty locking onto the start with the immense winds and whitecaps in the area. The officials conclued there could have been an added risk of boat damage, and races following the break were officially canceled. With less extreme conditions in the early morning, the Hornets' varsity four and the novice eight raced in their heats to qualify for Sunday's grand final.
Of the Hornets' five entries, all five will race in a grand final tomorrow. The varsity four was slotted into tomorrow's grand final after a first place finish in this morning's heat. In addition, the novice eight posted a second-place finish in their heat today to qualify for tomorrow's grand final.
The varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight will race in the same lanes based on Saturday's seedings in their grand finals tomorrow after not competing in today's heats due to the extreme wind conditions, which escalated throughout the day.
The Hornets' varsity four placed first in its heat this morning (8:07.4) and will compete out of Lane 1 in a four-team grand final tomorrow morning featuring San Diego State, Saint Mary's A and Saint Mary's B.
The Hornets' novice eight finished second in its heat with a time of 7:51.8, and will compete in its grand final tomorrow against San Diego State, UC Santa Barbara, San Diego, Stanford Lightweights and Orange Coast College.
