MEN'S SOCCER BATTLES CSU BAKERSFIELD TO 1-1 DRAW

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - With Sacramento State trailing 1-0 late sophomore midfielder Paul Geyer scored an equalizer in the 85th minute and the Hornets had a few near misses after that in a 1-1 double-overtime draw with CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at Hornet Field.

In its home opener, Sacramento State (0-3-1) held CSU Bakersfield (1-1-1) to just two shots on goal. The Roadrunners had a 19-13 overall shot advantage but the Hornets were 5-2 in shots on goal and had the better scoring chances, especially late in the second half and throughout the two overtime periods.

"It was an interesting game; I thought there were a lot of ebbs and flows," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "I thought they controlled the game for a good period and we controlled the game for periods as well. We had a tremendous response after they went up 1-0 and found the equalizer, and then I thought we had the better chances afterwards as well."

The game was scoreless through the first 61 minutes before the Roadrunners got on the board. Simon Doherty sent a short cross through the Hornet goal mouth and teammate Dante Nino headed the ball to senior Christian Duarte, who fired an open shot into the goal.

Sacramento State redshirt freshman Brad Bumgarner nearly tied the game in the 70th minute but his look on goal missed just high, then three minutes later Cylus Sandoval had a shot barely go wide.

A yellow card was issued to the Roadrunners in the 85th minute giving the Hornets a free kick from 25 yards out. Senior Isaac Flores took the set piece and sent the ball into the CSUB goalmouth where sophomore Fernando Ochoa headed the ball to Geyer and he was able to finish from close range.

The Hornets had the only two shots of the first overtime, with a great look by Sandoval that missed just high. In the second OT, Flores was robbed of a potential game winner on a sliding stop by CSUB goalkeeper Nicolas Clever and Ochoa had a shot in the final minute miss wide.

Sacramento State did not allow a Roadrunner shot on goal, other than the one they scored on, over the last 80 minutes of the game. Hornet sophomore goalkeeper James Del Curto was credited with just one save but made several more strong plays on dangerous balls in the box. Clever finished with four saves for the visitors.

Sandoval led the Hornets with four shots while Flores and junior Bert Corona had two apiece. CSU Bakersfield took 11 corner kicks in the game while allowing just three. Each team was issued three yellow cards in the game.

After a brief stop at home Sacramento State is back on the road next week. The Hornets will be in Phoenix for the weekend and face Incarnate Word in a neutral site game on Friday and play at Grand Canyon on Sunday.
