Box Score MORAGA, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Brad Bumgarner and redshirt junior John Quintanilla scored and Sacramento State allowed just two shots on goal in a 2-0 victory over Saint Mary's on Sunday in Moraga.
The win gave Sacramento State (3-4-1) back-to-back shutouts against West Coast Conference (WCC) teams after a 1-0 victory over Pacific last week. The Hornets have gone 3-1-1 over their last five games as they concluded non-conference play with Sunday's win.
Saint Mary's (3-6-1) was not credited with a shot on goal until the 56th minute of the contest while the Hornets put six shots on goal in the game. The Gaels did outshoot Sacramento State 14-11 overall and 10-6 in the second half but had just two shots on goal with Hornet goalkeeper James Del Curto making two saves, including one on a penalty kick in the 85th minute, for the shutout.
Quintanilla nearly gave the Hornets the lead in the eighth minute but his header was cleared off the goal line by a Saint Mary's defender.
In the 22nd minute, Bumgarner put the Hornets on top with his third goal of the season. From 30 yards out from the Saint Mary's goal, Bumgarner stole the ball from Gael defender Forrest Solis for a breakaway and dribbled around goalkeeper Lucas Champenois for an open finish.
The Gaels did not have a shot on goal in the first half as the Hornets totaled a 5-4 shot advantage and had five corner kicks while allowing only one.
In the 70th minute, the Hornets earned a throw in and freshman Christian Guzman showed off the impressive distance on his flip throw. From about 25 yards off the end line, Guzman made a perfect throw to the front of the goalmouth and Quintanilla finished with a header to double the Hornet lead.
Saint Mary's best chance to score came in the 85th minute after earning a penalty kick off a Hornet foul in the box. Gael forward Max Mirner took the PK but was denied by Del Curto on a dive to his right as the Hornet backstop completed the shutout.
Quintanilla had a game-high three shots, placing two on goal, and Bumgarner totaled two shots. In his first season playing for the Hornets, Bumgarner now has three goals on just four shots on goal, converting an absurd 75% of his shots on goal this season. He also leads the team with two game-winning goals.
