BUMGARNER GOAL, STRONG D GIVES MEN'S SOCCER 1-0 SHUTOUT OF PACIFIC

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Brad Bumgarner scored his second goal of the season in the 69th minute and goalkeeper Philip Bru and the Hornet defense posted the team's first clean sheet of the year in a 1-0 win over Pacific on Friday at Hornet Field.

Sacramento State (2-4-1) allowed just two shots on goal, with Bru making a superb leaping save late in the contest to post the shutout. Pacific (1-5-0) held the Hornets to just three shots on goal them selves but Bumgarner finished the only goal the home team would need.

"At halftime coach Mike stressed that we need to get shots on goal, " Bumgarner said. "It doesn't matter as long as you get a shot off and see what happens. That's exactly what I did and I took that shot and was lucky enough it went off the goalie and trickled into the back of the net."

Connecting passes from junior Bert Corona and senior Cesar Mendoza set Bumgarner up with a run on goal along the right side of the Pacific box. He took a low strike from 10 yards out, and Tiger goalkeeper Josh Adachi tried to dive on top of it but the ball went through his arms and into the net.

"We're excited with the result and we're excited about the shutout," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "If we can hold opponents to zero to one goals we have a fantastic chance to win every game. We didn't play great soccer for 90 minutes today but I thought we competed well for 90 minutes and we found a way to win and get a shutout."

After Bumgarner's goal both teams created more scoring chances, and in the 76th minute Pacific's Tristan Blackmon had a header in close that Bru leaped to deflect over the crossbar to maintain the Hornet lead. The Tigers also had a near miss prior to the Hornet goal as Julio Cervantes sent a ball just past the far post on a close shot in the 62nd minute.

Sacramento State was close to a second goal in the 82nd minute as a header by senior Isaac Flores was denied on a strong stop by Adachi. The Tigers had five corner kicks in the second half but were limited to just two shots on goal over the final period.

Pacific had an 8-3 shot advantage in the first half but neither team could get much offensive pressure going. There was only one corner kick taken in the period and just one shot on goal, as Bru stopped that Pacific try in the 26th minute.

The Hornets outshot the Tigers 8-5 in the second half but Pacific had a 13-11 advantage for the game. The visitors were 5-2 in corner kicks but were whistled for 18 fouls, a season high against the Hornets.

Bumgarner led all players with five shots while Flores had three. No player had more than one shot on goal in the game, and Adachi finished with two saves in the loss.

The Hornets are off for more than a week before completing the non-conference portion of their schedule next Sunday, Sept. 27, at Saint Mary's.
