EARLY GOAL NOT ENOUGH AS MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO GRAND CANYON IN OT

Box Score

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Sacramento State took a 1-0 lead just 20 seconds into the game but Grand Canyon equalized in the 68th minute and found a golden goal in the 100th minute for a 2-1 overtime win over the Hornets on Sunday night.

Junior Bert Corona scored his second goal of the weekend for Sacramento State (1-4-1), putting home a free kick just 20 seconds into the contest. That would be the only Hornet goal as Antelope goalkeeper Kendyl Day made seven saves for Grand Canyon (3-1-0).

Junior Philip Bru also made seven saves and helped preserve his team's lead through the first 67 minutes of the game. In a very even contest, Grand Canyon had a slight 19-17 edge in shots (9-8 on goal) while the Hornets were 7-6 in corner kicks.

GCU was called for a foul six seconds into the game, giving the Hornets a free kick from 25 yards out that Corona sent into the Antelope goal. The Hornet junior now leads that team with two goals and one assist for five points this season.

The goal was Sacramento State's only shot on goal in the half, but Bru made three stops to maintain the Hornet lead. Sacramento State had five quick shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, with Day making three saves and senior Isaac Flores narrowly missing a goal as he hit the crossbar in the 61st minute.

In the 68th minute the Hornets were issued a yellow card in the box, prompting a GCU penalty kick. Bru made the initial save with a dive to his left on the try from Alberto Sanchez Garcia, but the Antelope senior picked up his own rebound and scored on a second shot. The lone goal the Hornets gave up on Friday against Incarnate Word was exactly the same, with an initial stop on the PK but a rebound put in by the shooter.

Bru made five other saves in the second half while Day stopped four to send the game to overtime. In the 95th minute sophomore Cylus Sandoval placed a header on goal that required Day to make a superb leap to deflect the ball over the crossbar.

Grand Canyon's game winner came with 32 seconds left in the first overtime as Tafadzwa Semwwayo sent a long free kick into the box from just past midfield that teammate Alex Hallis headed off a Hornet and in the goal.

Bru's seven saves were a season high for the Hornets and the team's 17 shots and seven corner kicks were also season bests. The Hornets have now allowed four penalty kicks this season, stopping two of them.

Sacramento State plays just once next week, hosting Pacific at 5 p.m. Friday at Hornet Field.
