BASEBALL EDGED BY GRAND CANYON 4-2 IN 11 INNINGS

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Grand Canyon came back from an early 2-0 deficit to force extra innings and got a game-winning 2-run home run from third baseman Ben Mauseth in the 11th inning to pick up a 4-2 win on Friday at John Smith Field.

Sacramento State (30-24, 16-10 WAC) had its eight-game winning streak snapped and dropped back to fourth place in the WAC before the regular season concludes tomorrow. Grand Canyon (31-22, 18-7 WAC), which is ineligible for the WAC Tournament, can claim the regular season league title with a win on Saturday.

In other WAC action on Friday, Seattle U and CSU Bakersfield both picked up road victories. At 18-8 in the WAC Seattle U clinched the top seed for the WAC Tournament with its win while Bakersfield moved ahead of the Hornets with a 16-9-1 league record. Sacramento State can still claim the second seed for the tournament and a first round bye but will need a win tomorrow and a loss by Bakersfield at Chicago State.

The Hornets had 13 hits on Friday but hit into two double plays and stranded 11 men on base. Grand Canyon also had plenty of chances with 12 hits and eight left on base but got the big hit when it needed it in the 11tth, with Mauseth launching a 2-run shot to right center with two out in the inning for his first career home run.

Sacramento State took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning, scoring one run on an RBI double from freshman Dan Deely in the second inning and adding another in the fourth inning on a Deely RBI single.

In his final home start Hornet senior Brennan Leitao allowed just four singles and no walks through five innings before Grand Canyon got a leadoff double in the sixth and scored on an RBI single from second baseman Chad De La Guerra. In the eighth inning, the Antelopes got the tying run aboard on a Hornet fielding error and tied the game on another RBI single from De La Guerra.

With the game level 2-2 in the ninth inning Hornet freshman Bronson Grubbs had a single and reached second with two out but a hard groundball from senior Scotty Burcham went off the GCU pitcher to shortstop Paul Panaccione for a force out at second to end the inning. The Hornets threatened again with two on and two out in the 10th but Deely's sharp grounder on the left side of the infield hit freshman Vinny Esposito on his way to third for the third out.

Grand Canyon reliever Mick Vorhof navigated through the 10th inning and set the Hornets down in order in the 11th to complete the win. Starter Andrew Naderer allowed two runs on 10 hits over 6.2 innings for the Antelopes before three relievers finished the game.

Leitao went eight innings and allowed just one earned run on eight hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Senior Ty Nichols pitched two more scoreless innings before junior Sutter McLoughlin pitched the 11th.

Deely had his second career three-hit game while junior Nathan Lukes also had three hits and sophomore Brandon Hunley was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Eight of the nine Hornet starters had a hit in the game including senior Kyle Moses, who returned from injury and doubled in the first inning in his first at-bat since April 14.

The Hornets play for the series win and the number two seed for the WAC Tournament in the regular season finale at noon Saturday at John Smith Field. Seniors Burcham, Leitao, Moses, and Nichols will be honored after the game.
