SOFTBALL ERASES EARLY DEFICIT IN 5-4 WIN OVER COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Sacramento State erased an early 3-0 deficit by scoring two runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth, all with two outs, on the way to a 5-4 victory over College of Charleston in the third round of the CSUN/LMU Tournament on Saturday at Matador Diamond.

The win allowed the Hornets to improve to 5-9 overall and 2-1 at the three-day tournament, which included a win yesterday against CSU Bakersfield and loss to CSUN. Sacramento State wraps up tourney play tomorrow with games against CSU Bakersfield (9 a.m.) and Loyola Marymount (11:30 a.m.).

The loss dropped College of Charleston to 9-5.

The three-run deficit was the largest of the season overcome by the Hornets. In addition, making the victory that much sweeter, Sacramento State scored twice in the fourth inning, and three times in the sixth inning, and all five of those runs were scored after two outs had been recorded.

True freshman Celina Matthias (2-4) worked 6.1 innings of relief, allowing just five hits and one run to pick up her second victory of the season. Matthias entered the game in the first inning with two outs after the Cougars hit three consecutive doubles off Hornet starter Kaitlyn Yerby. After allowing her only run of the game in the seventh and the Cougars had the potential tying runner at second base with one out, Matthias was able to work out of the jam and retire the final two batters of the game.

The Hornets began to mount their rally in the fourth inning. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Kortney Solis got the rally started with a walk, followed by an RBI-triple from Paige Castro and an RBI-double from Alexa Chattleton

In the sixth inning, a Sasha Margulies RBI-single and Cougar error allowed two runs to score, before Marissa Maligad's RBI-double scoring Margulies proved to the game-winning hit.

Maligad finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI while Paige Martin, Solis, Castro, Chattleton and Margulies also had hits.

The Courgars' Hope Klicker (4-4) picked up the loss in relief, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) in one inning. College of Charleston used three pitchers in the game.
