BASEBALL WALKS OFF AGAIN, BEATS PORTLAND 3-2

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - For the second consecutive game Sacramento State won in dramatic fashion as senior Kyle Moses lined a single up the middle to score freshman Bronson Grubbs in the bottom of the ninth and give the Hornets a 3-2 walk off win in the first of a four-game series vs. Portland.

On Monday freshman Dan Deely was the hero with a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth and the shot off the bat of Moses on Friday was a similarly struck ball. Sacramento State (4-1) won its fourth consecutive game, with the last three of those wins coming by two runs or fewer. After a 9-0 win over Seattle U on Tuesday Portland (1-5) was held at bay by Hornet senior Brennan Leitao and sophomore Justin Dillon on Friday.

Leitao allowed just one run over seven innings of work, scattering seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts. The Pilots scored an unearned run off Dillon to tie the game at 2-2 in the eight inning but the redshirt sophomore went on to pitch a scoreless ninth and pick up his second win of the season.

In a fast-paced pitchers duel the Hornets loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first and scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from senior Scotty Burcham. The lead held until the fourth inning when Portland shortstop Kevin Farley single to shallow left field to bring home teammate Michael Lucarelli and tie the score.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Hornet sophomore Brandon Hunley singled to left and stole second, and with two away freshman Vinny Esposito smoked a double down the left field line to give Sacramento State a 2-1 lead. Portland got a leadoff single in the eighth and with the runner on second and one out Geoffrey Lee lined a ball up the middle that skipped past Deely into centerfield and allowed the tying run to score.

Portland reliever Brandon Snyder worked a scoreless eighth inning and got the first out in the ninth before Grubbs reached on a one-out single. A balk got him to second base and a sharp single to left from Deely put runners on the corners with one out. Moses then lined a 1-0 pitch up the middle to deliver the Hornet win.

Sacramento State had nine hits in the game, with all nine starting position players recording exactly one hit. Farley and third baseman Cody Lenahan each went 2-for-4 to lead Portland while the starting pitcher for the Pilots, junior Jackson Lockwood, delivered a strong six innings allowing two runs on just six hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

With five strikeouts in the game Leitao surpassed former Hornet Chris Kinsey and equaled Gary Wilson with 178 career strikeouts, tied for the sixth most in program history. Grubbs stole his WAC-leading fifth base of the season while Hunley also had a steal and catcher Gunner Pollman cut down 2-of-3 Portland stolen base attempts. Leitao also got an out on the bases with a key pickoff of the potential tying run at second base in the seventh inning.

The Hornets and Pilots play an old fashion double header on Saturday at John Smith Field. Game one begins at 11 a.m. with game two slated to begin roughly 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
