WOMEN'S BASKETBALL BREAKS SCORING RECORD IN 126-78 ROUT OF UC IRVINE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State scored a school and Big Sky Conference record 126 points and had the largest margin of victory over a Div. I team in program history in a 126-78 victory over UC Irvine on Tuesday in The Nest.

Sacramento State (3-7) topped its own Big Sky scoring record of 123 points set last year against Portland State. The 48-point margin of victory was two more than the 123-77 win the Hornets had against the Vikings last season for their biggest ever margin of victory against a Div. I school. The 126 points were the most that any NCAA Div. I team has scored in a game this season.

"I'm happy for the win; we needed it," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "We're working hard and we've played a brutal schedule up to this point and the bottom line is to get better every day. We've been through some battles and today I think our players were ready to defend their home turf."

The Hornets shot a blistering 48.9% from the field, easily the team's highest field goal percentage of the year, after shooting a season-low 27.5% just two days ago against Hawaii. Sacramento State shot 27-39 (69.2%) on 2-point field goal attempts in the game and hit 17 3-pointers.

Six Hornets scored in double figures with Junior Brianna Burgos leading the way with 23 points coming off five made 3-pointers. Junior Gretchen Harrigan had a season-high 20 points, shooting 10-of-10 from the free throw line, and senior Adella Randle-El poured in 18.

Sophomore Maranne Johnson had 15 points with a career-high eight assists, five rebounds, and five steals. Junior Ashlyn Crenshaw totaled 14 points and a game-high six steals and sophomore Abbey Goodsell hit three 3-pointers and totaled a career-high 11 points.

The game was never close, as Sacramento State had an early 19-0 run to blow the game open at 24-4 just five minutes into the first quarter. The home team never led by fewer than 16 points for the remainder of the game, leading 33-14 at the end of the first quarter and 51-31 at halftime.

The lead reached 30 points off an 18-4 run early in the third quarter and got to 40 at 90-50 with 1:20 left in the third as the Hornets scored 39 points in the 10-minute third quarter alone. The lead peaked at 50 with a 118-58 score with 3:43 left in the contest.

Senior Ericka Magaña hit consecutive 3-pointers in the last two minutes of the game to tie and then break the scoring record for her team.

The Hornets forced a season-high 38 turnovers and had just 11 of their own, outscoring the Anteaters 55-10 in points off turnovers. Sacramento State's 24 steals in the game tied for the fourth most among all Div. I teams this season.

UC Irvine (3-9) had a slim 44-41 edge in rebounding but Sacramento State pulled down 21 offensive boards for 22 second-chance points. The Hornets had a 22-4 advantage in fast break points and shot 21-of-28 from the free throw line.

The Anteaters shot an even 50.0% for the game but attempted 22 fewer shots and 13 fewer free throws than the Hornets and were just 1-of-8 from 3-point range. Sophomore Chloe Kellum scored 16 points off the bench and junior Mokun Fajemisin had 12 points and three blocks to lead UC Irvine.

Sacramento State has one more non-conference game before beginning Big Sky play at home on Jan. 2. The Hornets will play at Cal Poly next Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m.
