FOOTBALL BETTERED BY CAL POLY DESPITE SEASON HIGH PASSING

Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Sacramento State offense was able to move the ball through the air but the Cal Poly option offense proved too potent in a 36-14 Mustang victory on Saturday at Spanos Stadium.

As a team, the Hornets (2-7, 1-6) finished with 395 yards of total offense compared to 461 for the Mustangs. Cal Poly (3-6, 2-4) rushed for 366 yards and three touchdowns and was also in limited pass attempts. The Mustangs completed 6-of-9 attempts for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Conversely, the Hornets had 360 passing yards and just 35 on the ground.

Freshman quarterback Nate Ketteringham threw for a career high 335 yards while completing 33-of-42 with a touchdown to lead the Hornets. Shane Harrison and Jalein Ratliff each went over the century mark in receiving yards. Harrison caught a career-high 12 passes for 128 yards and Ratliff finished with nine receptions for 116 yards after entering the year with three catches for 33 yards.

Sacramento State took the opening kickoff and drove deep inside Cal Poly territory before settling for a field goal. The 32-yard attempt, however, was blocked leaving the Hornets without points. During the series, Ketteringham completed his first seven pass attempts for 62 yards.

Cal Poly responded with an 11-play, 85-yard drive for the game's first touchdown. After relying on its rush offense, the Mustangs turned to the air where Chris Brown connected with Jordan Hines for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

The Hornets appeared to have Cal Poly stopped early in its second drive but a personal foul following a third-down play kept the drive alive. The Mustangs used the second chance and finished the 84-yard drive with a 29-yard pass from Brown to Kyle Lewis.

The 14-0 score held until the third quarter where Joe Protheroe plunged in from a yard out. A missed extra point gave the Mustangs a 20-0.

Sacramento State moved the ball into Cal Poly territory on the ensuing drive and attempted to convert on 4th-and-7. However, Ketteringham was sacked for a 15-yard loss which set up CP for a 46-yard scoring drive to make the score 26-0.

The Hornets posted their first points late in the third quarter when Jordan Robinson dove in from the 2. During the drive, Ketteringham completed 4-of-6 attempts and also rushed for a first down. The team was also able to take advantage of two Cal Poly penalties, including a pass interference call in the end zone.

The Mustangs answered with a 23-yard field goal from Alex Vega five minutes into the fourth quarter and then received a 70-yard rush from Reagan Enger right through the middle of the field.

Harrison capped the scoring for the night with a 3-yard touchdown catch in which he was able to out jump the defender and come down with a tumbling grab.

Linebacker Darnell Sankey and safety Manny Scott-Anderson each cracked double figures in tackles. Sankey had 13 stops while Scott-Anderson tallied a career best 12.

Sacramento State will next play at Northern Arizona on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m. PT.

NOTES: Safety Dre Terrell, a high school quarterback, connected with long snapper Josh Latham for a 25-yard completion on a fake punt…the reception was the longest play from scrimmage for the Hornets in the game…freshman Damon Jackson had a 12-yard catch during the final drive for his first career reception…Ketteringham became the first Hornet to throw for 300 yards this season…Harrison and Ratliff became the first pair of 100-yard receivers for Sacramento State this year.
