MEN'S SOCCER RALLIES FOR THRILLING 3-2 OVERTIME WIN OVER UC IRVINE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Down 2-1 with less than 10 minutes to play, Hornet freshman Jessie Gonzalez scored on a rocket to the upper-90 and less than three minutes into overtime junior John Quintanilla headed in the game winner as Sacramento State rallied for a 3-2 overtime win over UC Irvine.

The win gave Sacramento State (4-6-1, 2-1-0 Big West) three critical points to open the second week of conference play. Ranked No. 10 in the country one week into the 2015 season, UC Irvine (2-7-3, 0-2-1 Big West) has now won only one of its last 11 games.

"We were in desperate need of three points after going 0-2 last weekend," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "Three points was really important, and coming from a goal down twice and then finding the winner in overtime was fantastic. I couldn't be more proud of this group."

In addition to the timely goals the story was sophomore goalkeeper James Del Curto, who made a career high 14 saves. The Hornet goalie kept his team in the game despite a barrage of Anteater shots on goal. The 16 UCI shots on goal were the most against the Hornets this season.

"I thought James was fantastic," Linenberger said. "Irvine is a good team and they were dangerous with shots on target. He made 14 saves and I would say at least five or six of them were really good saves. James kept us in the game when they were looking for that next goal and gave us a chance."

Del Curto made seven saves in each half. Less than three minutes into overtime, freshman Christian Guzman sent a cross into the box that was chipped along by junior Andrew Gosselin to Quintanilla, who had an open finish to give the Hornets their first Big West win of the season.

Sacramento State looked to take an early 1-0 lead but a close shot by Gosselin was deflected off the crossbar by Irvine goalkeeper Michael Breslin. In the eighth minute, Anteater senior forward Jaime Phillips gave the visitors the 1-0 lead finishing to the far post on a feed from Ivan Canales.

Just one minute and 16 seconds later the Hornets tied the game when junior Ivan Ramirez crossed a ball into the UC Irvine box and senior Isaac Flores beat Breslin with a low finish to the far post.

The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the 68th minute when Mats Bjurman put the Anteaters ahead off an indirect free kick in the box. Gonzalez leveled the game in the 81st minute, taking a pass from Ramirez atop the box and blasting a perfect shot to the top right corner of the UCI goal.

UC Irvine had a 20-16 overall shot advantage and was 16-8 in shots on goal as the visitors only sent four shots off target. Flores led the Hornets with four shots but Gonzalez was the only Sacramento State player to place multiple shots on goal. Phillips put all six of his shot attempts on frame as did Bjurman with four shots.

The Anteaters used only 13 players in the game, bringing just two subs off the bench. UC Irvine had defeated Sacramento State twice last season in Irvine, including eliminating the Hornets from the 2014 Big West Tournament.

Big West interdivision play concludes on Saturday when the Hornets host CSUN at 4 p.m. The 2010 NCAA Tournament Sacramento State men's soccer team will be honored at halftime of Saturday's game.
