"This is a tough place to play. Davis is a good team and fantastic on set pieces," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "I thought we had a good first 30 minutes of the second half and we got the equalizer. We didn't find enough moments when we could get the ball on the ground today, but it's a point on the road and hopefully will be a valuable point."
As always the game between the two rivals was physical and tightly contested and contained a bit of controversy. In the second overtime UC Davis had what appeared to be the game-winning goal on a header off of a long throw in, but as the Aggies were celebrating the official met with one of the line judges and the play was ruled to have been offside, wiping away the goal.
In the early going UC Davis had the majority of the possession as the Aggies held an 8-1 shot advantage in the first half and did not allow a single Hornet shot on goal. The home team took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when redshirt freshman Roy Boateng was denied on a strong save by Hornet goalkeeper James Del Curto but Miguel Acevedo was in position to put home the rebound from close range.
Sacramento State's first shot on goal of the game found the back of the net in the 54th minute. Redshirt junior John Quintanilla sent a deep ball to junior Ivan Ramirez to the right of the box, and his cross connected with sophomore Cylus Sandoval for an open finish in the goalmouth.
The Hornets continued to put pressure on the Aggie goal through the second period, putting three total shots on goal while holding UC Davis to just one, though the Aggies also had a shot hit the post.
In the first overtime the Hornets came close to a winner off a corner kick in the final minute but a header from junior Andrew Gosselin missed just wide. UC Davis had the better chances in the second OT but was unable to score.
Del Curto was strong again in the Hornet goal, finishing the contest with six saves. Sandoval, Gosselin, and sophomore Elias Rieland were each credited with two shots in the contest but the Hornets were able to put just three total shots on goal.
The overall shot count was 17-9 in favor of UC Davis. Sacramento State had more corner kicks (5-3) and, despite 27 total fouls called, the teams were issued just three total yellow cards, only one of which went against the Hornets.
The third consecutive overtime game between the Hornets and Aggies came after just one of the first 17 meetings between the teams in the Div. I era went extra time. The squads meet again next Saturday at Hornet Field.
Before that, Sacramento State heads to the central coast to face Cal Poly Wednesday at 7 p.m. in San Luis Obispo.
