Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Matadors' Davis Turcios scored goals in the 46th and 63rd minutes to overcome a 1-0 deficit as CSUN defeated Sacramento State, 2-1, in a Big West Conference soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field.
CSUN, formerly called Cal State Northridge, dealt the Hornets their first defeat at home this season. Sacramento State (4-7-1, 1-3-0) had been unbeaten in three games at home prior to the loss. It also marked the first time in six games dating back to last season the Hornets suffered a loss at home in regulation.
With the win, the Matadors, who have allowed just 14 goals all season, improved to 5-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference. Sacramento State had won two of the last three meetings between the two teams, including a 1-0 victory in Northridge last season. The Hornets are now 1-6 all-time when playing CSUN at home.
In a game which featured a combined 30 shots (16 for Sacramento State, 14 for CSUN), it was the Hornets who struck first when redshirt freshman Brad Bumgarner connected on his team-high fourth goal just 78 seconds into the contest. The goal for Bumgarner was his third in the last six games, and came on an assist from senior Cesar Mendoza.
However, the Matadors tied the score just 41 seconds into the second half when Turcios scored on a double assist from Nicolas Camacho and Jeremy Degraffenreidt. Turcios would strike again in the 63rd minute for his third goal of the season, and what proved to be the game winner.
Of the 16 Sacramento State shots, three were on net while Northridge put five of its 14 shots on goal. Both teams had five corner kicks, and CSUN drew three yellow cards (two in the second half) and eight fouls while the Hornets drew one yellow and six fouls.
Of the Hornets' 16 shots, 10 came in the second half, including four in the final nine minutes of the contest. Sacramento State saw nine of its players record at least one shot in the game, including four from Bumgarner, three from Ivan Ramirez and two each from Trevor Jackson and Bert Corona. Goalkeeper James Del Curto finished with a pair of saves.
Sacramento State plays the final leg of its season-high three-game homestand on Wednesday when the team hosts Big West rival UC Santa Barbara at 4 p.m. The Hornets are currently 1-1 on the homestand, which includes a 3-2 overtime victory against UC Irvine two days ago.
