MEN'S SOCCER ENDS NON-CONFERENCE PLAY WITH LOSS AT BAKERSFIELD

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Bakersfield took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the first half and scored four more times in the second half to defeat the Hornets 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.

After just its second road game of the season Sacramento State ended the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 2-5-2 record. Bakersfield, ranked fourth in the West region in the NSCAA poll, improved to 6-2-1.

Playing again with just 13 healthy position players, Sacramento State hung with the Roadrunners through most of the first half but simply did not have enough manpower over the final 45. Bakersfield hit the crossbar on a shot in the seventh minute but got its only goal of the first period in the 40th minute as the Hornets were called for a foul in the box and Joe Masumiya put in the penalty kick.

Bakersfield doubled its lead in the 59th minute after Hornet goalkeeper Teddy Sampson made an initial save but Simon Doherty put in the rebound. Six minutes later Julian Zamora made the game 3-0 on a shot to the lower left corner.

Goals in the 71st and 90th minutes finished the win for Bakersfield. The five goals were scored by five different players and no Roadrunner had more than one assist. Zamora and Doherty each had a goal and an assist.

The Roadrunners owned a 16-7 shot advantage for the game and put 11 shots on goal. The Hornets didn't have a shot on goal until the 68th minute and both of the team's shots on goal in the game came from sophomore Bert Corona.

Sacramento State had allowed one goal or fewer in each of its last five games. The 5-0 final was the worst loss for the Hornets since a 6-0 loss at San Francisco in 2003. The Hornets have been outscored 19-0 in their last five games against Bakersfield.

The Hornets return home to open Big West play next week. The conference opener against UC Riverside will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Hornet Field.
