MEN'S SOCCER PLAYS SAINT MARY'S TO A 1-1 DRAW IN PHYSICAL BATTLE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In a tremendously physical game with 10 yellow cards and 37 fouls whistled Sacramento State took a lead late in the first half on a goal by senior Chimdum Mez before Saint Mary's drew even in the 84th minute and the game ended in a 1-1 draw in double overtime.

"Saint Mary's is a very physical team," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "I was pleased with our team's performance in the first half - I thought we had moments of good soccer and our goal was fantastic, the prettiest goal we've scored this year. I was pleased with our reaction after they scored the equalizer and overtime was even, but the first 35 minutes of the second half it was one-way traffic for them."

Sacramento State (2-4-2) had to play a man down for the final 15 minutes of the second half and overtime as freshman Devante Raynor was issued a second yellow card of the contest, which becomes a red. Saint Mary's (5-2-1) saw its five-game winning streak come to an end and was whistled for an incredible 23 fouls in the game. The Gaels got three of the yellow cards, with the first coming less than a minute into the game, while the Hornets had seven (counting the second yellow to Raynor).

After a relatively tame first 30 minutes of the contest, the Hornets escalated their attack and got a goal in the 39th minute. Off a run down the left side of the field Raynor sent a perfect cross into the Saint Mary's box to find Mez for a header to the far post and a 1-0 Hornet lead.

The Hornets had a 7-6 shot advantage in the first half, but early in the second half the field began to tilt towards the Gaels, who totaled an 8-2 shot advantage in the second period. Sacramento State sophomore goalkeeper Teddy Sampson made an early save on a header try in the 51st minute but Saint Mary's continued to build its attack.

In the 79th minute, just after the Hornets went down a man, Sampson made a brilliant diving stop on a close try by Saint Mary's senior Michael Semenza and replicated the effort on another diving save in the 82nd minute.

In the 84th minute, a yellow card was issued to Hornet sophomore Preston Davis to give the Gaels a free kick deep in Sacramento State territory to the left of the goal. The set piece from junior Cory Schmidt was deflected off a body into the goal on a header by Semenza to tie the score.

Saint Mary's had a 3-0 shot edge in the first OT with Sampson making one stop. In the second overtime Sampson made two more saves and Saint Mary's goalkeeper Andre Rawls made one as the game finished as a 1-1 draw.

Sacramento State and Saint Mary's have now tied in each of their last five meetings dating back to 2009, with three 1-1 draws and two 0-0 finals. Saint Mary's totaled a 20-11 shot advantage for the game, including a 14-4 edge over the second half and overtime, and finished 8-5 in shots on goal. The visitors also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Making just his second start of the season and the third start of his career, Sampson made a career-high seven saves to earn the draw and lower his goals against average to 0.90.

"When you make a save and hear the crowd it's incredible and I love it," Sampson said. "From the beginning we knew Saint Mary's was very direct from the back and their chances were going to come from set pieces. We already had a lot of injuries (coming into the game) and then with the red card it put all the pressure on us and I thought we really came together as a team and we fought pretty hard."

Mez, who entered the game tied for fourth in the Big West with three goals, scored his fourth goal of the season and the seventh score of his career. He led Sacramento State with three shots in the game while Semenza led the Gaels with three shots and was one of 12 Saint Mary's players to attempt a shot. Linenberger went just four deep on his bench with several players unable to go due to injuries.

Sacramento State finished 2-3-2 on its program-record seven game homestand. The Hornets hit the road for just the second time this season and will close the non-conference portion of the schedule on Sunday at Bakersfield.
