Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In a mostly even matchup where Sacramento State had a plethora of quality scoring chances it was Air Force that was finally able to find the net with a goal in the 85th minute to pick up a 1-0 win at Hornet Field on Sunday.
On the final day of the Copa de Causeway Air Force and Grand Canyon were named co-champions of the tournament after UC Davis and Grand Canyon played to a 1-1 draw in Davis. The Hornets fell to GCU 1-0 in overtime on Friday while Air Force and UC Davis had a 1-1 tie on the first day of the tournament.
Sacramento State had two players named to the all-Tournament team with senior forward Chimdum Mez and sophomore defender Javier Muñoz earning the honor.
"We're disappointed with the result but overall pleased with our performance today," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "I thought we were miles above where we were on Friday. Soccer is an interesting game, because the result is the same (as Friday) but our performance was a lot better. This was probably the first game this year that I thought we deserved a better result than the score line indicated, but we have to finish chances."
Air Force (4-0-3) remained undefeated and has allowed just three goals in seven matches this season but easily could have seeded multiple goals to the Hornets on Sunday. Sacramento State (2-4-1) allowed one goal or fewer in its fourth consecutive game but took its second straight 1-0 loss.
The Hornets' scoring chances started early as senior Adan Martinez just missed wide on a close header try in the sixth minute. The game hit a bit of an offensive lull through the middle of the first half as just two shots, both by Air Force, were recorded over a 28-minute stretch.
Sacramento State revved up its attack late in the half. In the 43rd minute, Hornet freshman Devante Raynor was denied by Air Force goalkeeper Jake Schenk on a sliding stop right in front of the Falcon goal. On the ensuing corner kick by Raynor Mez had a header that appeared destined for the goal but was headed off the line by a Falcon defender. Raynor had another close header attempt in the final seconds of the half but it missed just wide.
Early in the second half the Hornets had two more corner kicks but couldn't get a goal. In the 59th minute, Sacramento State freshman Paul Geyer had a break in the Falcon box but was met with a sliding save by Schenk.
Schenk made a few more routine saves to keep the game scoreless. Meanwhile, Hornet sophomore goalkeeper Teddy Sampson, making his first start of the year, had some superb saves on Sunday including a diving stop on a hard strike by Falcon junior Joey Haug in the 82nd minute.
Air Force junior forward Zach Hill checked into the game in the 82nd minute, and less than three minutes later he had the winning goal. Some strong passing by the Falcons got the ball in the Hornet box and a chip feed from Haug found Hill for an open finish inside the left post. Mez had a last shot on a close header in the 88th minute but it landed just above the Air Force goal.
Schenk made five saves for the shutout while Sampson had four stops. The Hornets had a 6-3 shot edge in the first half but were outshot 12-6 in the second half. Mez was the only player in the game to place two shots on goal.
Sacramento State will conclude its program-record seven game homestand hosting Saint Mary's on Friday at 4 p.m.
