Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After 97 minutes of scoreless soccer Grand Canyon senior midfielder Kyle Summerhill put home a rebound off a shot stopped by Hornet goalkeeper Philip Bru to give the visiting Antelopes a 1-0 win on Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.
Before the game winner Bru made a strong save on an initial try by Grand Canyon's Niki Jackson, but the rebound deflected right to Summerhill for an open opportunity and he finished to the far side of the Hornet goal.
Sacramento State (2-3-1) lost in overtime for the first time in more than four years, as the defeat ended a string of 27 consecutive overtime games in which the Hornets did not lose. The team had been 11-0-16 in overtime games since dropping their 2010 season opener in OT.
Grand Canyon (2-3-0) held a 15-9 shot advantage for the game but placed just five shots on goal while the Hornets put three tries on net and hit two posts. The corner kicks were even 4-4 and the game was played fairly level after the Antelopes controlled play through most of the first half.
GCU had an 8-3 shot advantage in the first half but put just two tries on goal with Bru making a pair of stops. Sacramento State senior Chimdum Mez had the best scoring chance of the first half but his try in the 34th minute was deflected over the crossbar by Antelope goalkeeper Kendyl Day.
The Hornets again had a near goal early in the second half as a corner kick by senior Andres Garcia found teammate Cody Hoster on the far post for an unmarked header but the shot went off the post and out of play. In the 79th minute, Hornet sophomore Bert Corona had a free kick from the top of the box just miss with a deflection off the crossbar.
Neither team actually had a shot on goal over the final 36 minutes of regulation and the first seven minutes of overtime. Off a failed clearance in the 98th minute Jackson corralled the ball and had his break on goal that led to the game winner.
Garcia and Mez led the Hornets with two shots apiece. Bru made four saves while Day had three for the shutout. Jackson took seven shots, placing three on goal, to lead all players in both categories.
Friday's game was the opener of the Copa de Causeway. In other tournament action on Friday in Davis, Air Force and UC Davis traded goals in the first half and played to a 1-1 draw. Sacramento State will host Air Force, which is now 3-0-3 on the season, at 1 p.m. Sunday while UC Davis will host Grand Canyon at the same time to conclude the tournament.
