WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STYMIED BY UC DAVIS IN CAUSEWAY CLASH

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State led by as many as 11 points in the first half and held a 47-40 halftime lead, but the Hornets shot just 24.4 % in the second half and were 5-of-25 (20 %) from 3-point range as UC Davis emerged with a 90-82 win in the annual Causeway Cup battle between the teams.

"We're in a situation where when we don't shoot the basketball well we have to play harder on defense, and right now we're kind of hanging our heads when we don't shoot well," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "Davis is a good team and they don't make many mistakes. They played hard with a good, consistent effort and we were not as consistent with our effort. This is a tough group of young ladies we have on our team and their resolve is to get better."

Sacramento State (0-3) continued to struggle shooting the ball in the second half but was able to hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and put together a strong offensive effort. The tied turned in the second half as UC Davis (1-1) continued to get good looks in the paint and scored 50 points while shooting 59.3 % from the field.

The Aggies totaled 64 points in the paint overall and added 20 made free throws. For the game UC Davis shot 54.0 % and the Hornets shot just 31.2 %, and though Sacramento State was able to take 30 more shots than the visitors off of 28 offensive rebounds, the Aggies ended up with five more made field goals.

There were three ties and eight lead changes in the first half, but the Hornets led for all but four minutes and 10 seconds of the opening period. Sacramento State jumped to an early 11-4 lead and had an 18-7 run late in the half to take a game-high 11-point lead at 47-36 with 1:05 to play.

UC Davis scored the last four points of the first half and scored the first nine points of the second half to move ahead 49-47. The game was level at 62-62 with 10:04 to play, but a 9-0 Aggie run gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. The Hornets got no closer than a six-point deficit through the remainder of the contest.

Seniors Fantasia Hilliard and Takara Burse each scored 18 points to lead the Hornets with both adding five assists and Burse recording five rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Hallie Gennett made a trio of 3-pointers and had 11 points and sophomores Kyhonta Doughty and Margaret Huntington led the way with six rebounds apiece.

The Hornets outrebounded the Aggies 28-26 in the first half but UC Davis had a 30-19 rebounding edge in the second half. In a rarity in Hornet games the team was outscored by the opponent's bench, as the Aggies had a 45-31 scoring edge from their reserves.

Five UC Davis players scored in double figures, led by 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting from senior Sydnee Fipps. Sacramento State had a 19-7 edge in steals and forced 28 turnovers but outscored the Aggies just 24-14 in points off turnovers and only 16-15 in second chance points despite 11 more offensive rebounds.

Sacramento State concludes its brief homestand on Thursday hosting New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
