HILLIARD TOPS 1,000 POINTS BUT WOMEN'S HOOPS FALLS AT SAN DIEGO STATE

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sacramento State senior point guard Fantasia Hilliard became just the 12th player in program history to score 1,000 career points but as a team the Hornets shot just 28.0% for the game and took a 99-91 loss in their season opener at San Diego State.

Hilliard reached 1,000 with a free throw with two minutes remaining in the second half and added a half-court 3-point make at the buzzer to finish with 11 points on the afternoon and 1,003 for her career. She is also already the program leader in career assists and is close to breaking the career steals record.

Sacramento State re-broke its own NCAA record with 58 three-pointers attempted in the game, three more than the record-breaking total of 55 threes attempted last season against UC Irvine. The Hornets struggled from long range on Friday, however, making just 13-of-58 (22.4%) and shooting 4-of-27 (14.8%) from 3-point range in the second half. The Hornets also tied the program record for field goal attempts in a game with 93.

The Hornets mostly did what they hope to do in every game, attempting 93 shots, 58 threes, forcing 39 turnovers, and grabbing 22 offensive rebounds, but they simply could not make shots in the second half. Before the buzzer-beating three by Hilliard Sacramento State missed 21 consecutive 3-point shots over a period of more than 14 minutes as San Diego State pulled away.

Sacramento State held a 57-52 lead at halftime despite shooting just 32.0% from the field in the opening period. The Hornets forced 25 Aztec turnovers in the first half, scoring 24 points off those turnovers while committing just nine of their own. The visitors made nine 3-pointers in the first period and shot 16-of-18 from the free throw line, ending the half on a 6-0 run in the final minute to take the five-point halftime lead.

The biggest lead the Hornets held in the first half was six points, and the team led again by six after a 3-pointer from senior Takara Burse at the 14:16 mark of the second half. That was the last three the Hornets would make until the final second of the game.

The game was tied 74-74 with just over 12 minutes to play before San Diego State went on a 14-4 run over the next seven minutes to take a 10-point lead. The Hornets were unable to get closer than an eight-point deficit for the remainder of the contest.

While the Hornets broke the NCAA record for most 3-point attempts in a game San Diego State tied the record for fewest 3-point attempts in a game, taking none. The Aztecs shot 39-of-62 (62.9%) from the field and scored 72 of their 99 points in the paint. Sacramento State had a 15-39 turnover ratio and a 25-6 advantage in steals, but San Diego state was able to match the Hornets with 44 points off the bench and had just four fewer offensive rebounds than Sacramento State though the Hornets attempted 31 more shots.

Four Hornets scored in double figures led by 17 points from Burse, who shot just 2-of-10 from the field but was 12-of-12 at the free throw line. Hilliard, sophomore Brianna Burgos, and freshman Adella Randle-El each had 11 points. The Aztecs had five players in double figures with 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting from Khristina Hunter and 19-point double-doubles from Erimma Amarikwa and Cheyenne Greenhouse.

The Aztecs avenged a 93-89 loss to the Hornets in Sacramento last season. Sacramento State concludes its season-opening road trip at 2 p.m. Sunday at CSUN, which began its season with a 67-50 win over new Big Sky member Idaho on Friday.
