MEN'S SOCCER BEATS UC DAVIS IN OVERTIME IN WILD CAUSEWAY GAME

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. – Sacramento State sophomore defender Andrew Gosselin scored his second goal of the game on a flick header in the 98th minute to end a wild contest and give his team a 3-2 win at UC Davis. At total of 10 cards, including three reds, were issued in the game.

The Hornets were awarded a free kick on top of the box in the first overtime period and senior Andres Garcia found Gosselin crossing through the box for a header redirection into the far side of the Aggie goal. Gosselin also scored the first goal of the game on a similar header redirection on a feed from sophomore Bert Corona in the 29th minute.

"I'm kind of still in shock," Gosselin said. "We went up two men and we have to work on finishing the game better. We're glad to get the victory here – we didn't do it the easy way but doing it the way we did was better than not doing it."

Sacramento State (6-9-3, 4-4-1 Big West) won its second consecutive road match and is now just one point off the lead in the Big West North. UC Davis (6-3-9, 4-3-2 Big West) and UC Santa Barbara are tied for the division lead with 14 points.

Two red cards were issued against the Aggies and one for the Hornets. UC Davis went down a man just two minutes and six seconds into the game, then lost another late in the first half. Hornet senior Chimdum Mez was shown a red in the final minute of regulation time and there were also two penalty kicks awarded in the match.

"It was a wild game, one of the wildest games I've ever been a part of," 26th-season Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "Coming here in any circumstance and getting three points is obviously fantastic. The early red card kind of threw the game on its head. I was disappointed with how we handled being up a goal and 11-v-9 in the second half, but I credit my team with having a man sent off and coming back to find a way to win. You've got to credit Davis also; they worked so hard you could hardly tell that they were down two men."

The first red on the Aggies was given just over two minutes into the game as Eddie Manella was ejected for a hard foul. Shortly after gaining the man advantage the Hornets began to apply pressure on the UC Davis backline. The Hornets earned the first corner kick of the game in the 28th minute and scored shortly thereafter on the first goal by Gosselin.

UC Davis picked up another red in the 44th minute, while the only shot on goal for either team in the first half was the Gosselin score. UC Davis' first shot on goal would also be a score as Matt Sheldon drilled a shot to the upper 90 in the 54th minute, a goal that came just minutes after Hornet redshirt freshman Fernando Ochoa hit the post on a good look.

In the 69th minute, Sacramento State freshman Paul Geyer scored his first career goal, finishing in close after a good pass from freshman Cylus Sandoval. Six minutes later Hornet goalkeeper Philip Bru was called on a foul in the box and UC Davis senior Ramon Martin Del Campo tied the game on the penalty kick.

The Hornets received a penalty kick of their own in the 80th minute but senior Cody Hoster was stoned by UC Davis goalkeeper Armando Quezada on a dive to his left. In overtime, with each team short men on the field, the 12th foul of the game called on UC Davis gave Garcia the free kick to get the winner.

With just one game remaining in the regular season the Hornets are not only alive for a spot in the Big West tournament, they even have a shot at winning the Big West North division.

"Last year we really underperformed in the Big West so this year is kind of a redemption year," Gosselin said. "Getting a huge win at Cal Poly and at UC Davis, we have a lot of momentum. We believe in ourselves now; we're still a young team, but we realize what our potential is and we play hard every game for each other."

Gosselin's goals were his first scores of the season. Geyer led all players with five shots and Bru made four saves for his fourth win of the year. Sacramento State had a 23-13 shot advantage for the game and placed nine shots on goal after the Aggies had a 26-10 shot edge when the teams met just a week ago.

There had been two total red cards issued in the first 17 games of Sacramento State's season, and both were second yellows becoming a red. All three on Saturday were straight reds, which are typically pretty uncommon.

Sacramento State hosts UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. Wednesday on the final day of the regular season. Based on the results of the UC Santa Barbara-Cal Poly game to be played tomorrow evening, the Hornets could be playing the Gauchos for a shot at the divisional crown. At the very least, a win over the Gauchos would secure a spot in the Big West Tournament for Sacramento State.
