Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State senior forward Chimdum Mez out-jumped Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper David Elias Rodriguez in front of the Titan goal and headed home the winner goal just under the crossbar in a 1-0 double overtime victory on Saturday at Hornet Field.
Hornet senior defender Cody Hoster sent a feed into the goalmouth from just beyond midfield and found the 6-5 Mez on the jump ball in the 105th minute. Mez has scored the game-winning goal in each of the three Hornet wins this year after he had two overtime winners last season.
"I saw Cody playing it," Mez said. "I watched my line because I was offsides a few times. It was just a perfect ball going towards the keeper, but fortunately I jumped higher than his hands and I ended up getting the goal in."
The goal ended a 336 minute scoring drought for the Hornets dating back to Sept. 27. Sacramento State (3-6-2, 1-1-0 Big West) picked up its first conference win of the season while keeping Cal State Fullerton (4-5-2, 0-2-0 Big West) winless in the league.
The Mez heroics came after redshirt freshman James Del Curto, making his first career home start in goal, was unbeatable, making 10 saves while withstanding 22 Titan shots. Mez had a save himself, clearing a ball off the goal line in the 51st minute. The Hornets also got some help from the framework, as Fullerton shots hit the post in the 27th and 98th minutes
In all the Titans had a 22-9 shot advantage, including a 15-5 mark over the second half and overtime, and an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. Cal State Fullerton also had a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks, taking eight in the first half.
The Hornets almost got on the board early as sophomore Javier Muñoz had a header off a corner kick that was pushed off the crossbar and out by Elias Rodriguez in the 13th minute. Del Curto's first save of the game was also a superb one as he denied a header attempt with a diving stop in the 15th minute. Late in the first half Hornet freshman Cylus Sandoval had a clean break on goal but was rebuffed on a sliding save near the top of the box.
Three minutes into the second half Mez had a header try in front of the Titan goal but it missed just high. Cal State Fullerton had most of the offensive pressure after that, totaling a 10-2 advantage in shots over the second period but failing to beat Del Curto.
The Titans had four shots in the first overtime, hitting the post once and forcing Del Curto to make one save. The visitors missed wide on a close shot in the 102nd minute before the golden goal by Mez.
"We were exhausted so I was just telling them to keep grinding it out," Del Curto said. "We've been here before (in overtime), so I was just like, 'Grind it out and we will find a way.' In the end, Chimmy made a great shot."
The 10 saves by Del Curto equaled the most saves by a Hornet goalkeeper since the 2010 season. The goal by Mez was his fifth of the season among the nine goals scored by the team on the year.
Sacramento State opens the road portion of its Big West schedule with games next week at CSUN on Thursday and No. 3 UC Irvine on Saturday.
