Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Down 1-0 with less than 13 minutes left in regulation time Sacramento State got a goal from freshman Cylus Sandoval followed by an own goal created by Sandoval in the 84th minute to rally for a 2-1 win over Cal Poly on Wednesday night.
Cal Poly had a golden opportunity to double its lead to 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 63rd minute but redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Philip Bru made the save to spark his team to victory. The Hornets avenged a 3-1 loss to Cal Poly in Sacramento two weeks ago while staying alive in the Big West North.
With the win Sacramento State (5-9-3, 3-4-1 Big West) moved just one point behind Cal Poly for third place in the division and what would be a qualifying spot for the Big West Tournament. With two games left in the regular season the Hornets now have 10 points while Cal Poly (8-5-4, 3-3-2 Big West) has 11. UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis are tied for the division lead with 14 points apiece after the Gauchos beat the Aggies in overtime tonight.
Sacramento State had a 17-15 shot advantage for the game and placed seven shots on goal to beat Cal Poly goalkeeper Wade Hamilton. Bru made five saves, including a pair of dandies in the first half and the big PK stop in the second half.
The Hornets could have scored several more goals in the game as they were very dangerous throughout. Just five minutes into the contest senior Mason McCann fired a shot from outside the box that beat Hamilton but hit the post.
In the 54th minute Cal Poly took the lead on a free kick that was pushed off the crossbar by Bru but fell to Cal Poly's John Chronopoulos for a header into the open net. In the 65th minute Cal Poly's leading scorer Chase Minter, who scored and had an assist against the Hornets in Sacramento, took the penalty kick after the Hornets were called for a foul in the box but was denied by Bru on a diving save to his left.
Three minutes later Sandoval had a break on the Cal Poly goal but hit the crossbar. He would finish 10 minutes later, however, as the Hornets were awarded a free kick from just atop the Cal Poly box and, after touches by Andres Garcia and Adan Martinez, Sandoval blasted a low shot inside the left post to tie the game with his second goal of the season.
Just six minutes later Sandoval played a ball into the goal mouth from the end line to the left of the Cal Poly goal that deflected off Cal Poly defender Jack O'Connor and into the Mustang net and was scored an own goal. Cal Poly had a couple of late shots but could not place one on goal.
The loss was just the third all season for Cal Poly on its home field. Bru improved his season record to 3-2-2 and Sandoval led all players with five shots. Sacramento State picked up its first win since Oct. 9 and scored multiple goals in a game for the first time since Sept. 14 against Cleveland State.
Sacramento State plays its final road game of the season on Saturday in a rematch against Causeway rival UC Davis in Davis at 1 p.m. The regular season concludes next Wednesday when the Hornets will host UC Santa Barbara at Hornet Field.
