WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO CAL POLY, SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF 2012 SEASON

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Cal Poly scored three times over a six minute stretch early in the second half and handed the Sacramento State women's soccer team its first loss of the 2012 season, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Hornets (1-1-1) played to a scoreless draw with rival UC Davis on Friday but couldn't shut down the Mustangs (3-0-1) in similar fashion.

Caly Poly jumped on the board first with a goal 61 seconds before halftime but the Hornets responded with Raylene Larot's goal in 53rd minute. Larot, a transfer from Nevada playing in her third game with the Hornets, took a short cross from Jordan Carlberg in the middle of the box and finished with a shot toward the far post.

The 1-1 tie was short-lived, however, as Cal Poly unleashed its scoring streak just more than a minute after Larot's goal. Christina Farrington scored twice for the Mustangs in that stretch and Cici Kobinski notched two assists.

Cal Poly maintained pressure on the Hornets all game. The Mustangs used nine corner kicks to fire 13 shots (nine on goal) at Sacramento State keeper Kimberly Mata. Mata, playing in her second career game, made four saves but allowed all four goals.  There was nearly a fifth goal for the Mustangs but senior Megan Burg used a header on the goal line to clear away a sure score. Cal Poly keeper Alyssa Giannetti made seven saves with one goal allowed.

Both senior midfielder Victoria Ramirez and senior forward Christina Gomez had a team-high two shots on goal for the Hornets. As a team, Sacramento State tallied 13 shots with eight on goal and took four corners.

The teams combined for just nine fouls but two yellow cards were issued, one on each side.

Up next for the Hornets is their first road trip of the year. Sacramento State will play at San Francisco on Aug. 31 before a trip to Las Vegas for two games the following weekend.
