Kyle Peterson

Former Sacramento State standout Kyle Peterson has returned to campus as the throws coach for the Hornet track and field teams in January of 2025.
 
2025 Season
  • During his first season with the team, Peterson coached Kyle Smith who moved into 10th place in school history with a discus throw of 165-07.
  • Abby Sheets scored for the team after placing eighth in the javelin at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
  • Freshman Emmanuel Akutey led the men's team in the shot put and hammer during the outdoor season as well as the shot put and weight throw during the indoor season.
  • Hope Gordon paced the women's team in the shot put and discus outdoors while Jordan Bailey led the team in the hammer. During the indoor season, Sheets had the best shot put and Gordon the longest weight throw.
Peterson competed for Sacramento State from 2016-19 and remains ranked in the school’s top 10 in five events. He was a two-time NCAA West Preliminary qualifier in the discus (2018-19) and was the Big Sky weight throw champion in 2018. Peterson currently ranks second in the Hornet record book in the discus with a best of 180-feet in 2018. He is also fourth in the indoor shot put, sixth in the weight throw and hammer, and 10th in the outdoor shot put. Peterson qualified for the Big Sky Championships, and scored points for the team, during each of his seasons.
 
Since graduating Sacramento State with a degree in kinesiology, Peterson has worked at Mini’s House of Pain — a gym in El Dorado Hills, Calif. There he oversaw the strength and conditioning for Oak Ridge High School student-athletes. Peterson also coached the throwers at Oak Ridge HS.
 
Peterson came to the Hornets from Oakdale HS where he placed sixth at the California state meet as a senior in the discus. During his career, he was a two-time Sac-Joaquin Section Masters champion in the discus and won the Valley Oak League title all four years.
