Ed McGilvra

Eddy McGilvra begins his 10th season coaching, first season as a member of the Sacramento State football coaching staff. He is responsible for coaching the team’s defensive linemen.

McGilvra joined the Hornets staff after spending three seasons at Moorpark JC as the defensive line coach (2014-17) and special teams coordinator (2017). During his time at Moorpark, McGilvra coached numerous defensive linemen that went on to continue their careers at NCAA Div. I programs, with six of his former players receiving all SCFA honors and player of the year awards. McGilvra spent the 2018-2022 seasons at College of the Canyons JC where he was responsible for the defensive line and special teams. During his time at Canyons, McGilvra coached several NCAA Div. I signees as well as the top-ranked JUCO recruit in the country at their position (2018 & 2022) who went on to sign to Arkansas and Virginia Tech. McGilvra had five players in his 2021 class sign to Power Four programs which was the most in the state of California.

For the 2023 season, McGilvra was the Defensive Coordinator at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Calif. Leading the Knights to a first three game shutout performance allowing zero points in four of the 10 contests.

McGilvra returned to College of the Canyons in 2024 as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach where the defense was ranked first in multiple statistical categories (sacks, TFLs, turnovers, etc.). Canyons finished 8-3 that season and had seven all conference award winners on the defense along with the defensive player of the year. 

Outside of coaching college football, McGilvra is also known for his training of NFL talent. McGilvra hosts some of the top tier talent every off-season including: Khalil Mack, Aidan Hutchinson, Quennin Williams, Kenny Clark, Laitau Latu & more. McGilvra has a roster of over 50 active players that train with him over the off season periods as well as 16 first round draft picks. McGilvra has been known to develop some of the top talent for every NFL Draft cycle & All Star Games (Senior Bowl, Shrine Bowl) and will have another first rounder in Mason Graham (Michigan) for the 2025 Draft. During his bowl game prep McGilvra has had three players win MVP honors at the Senior Bowl. McGilvra has worked hand and hand with NFL teams to help them develop young undrafted free agents on their rosters, such as; LA Rams, LA Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans.
