Brian Martinez

Brian Martinez completed his first season at Sacramento State as assistant coach during the 2025 season.

Despite a 2025 Hornet roster that included just one returner and six freshmen, Martinez helped the Hornets to 10 wins. In fact, the Hornets used four freshmen and one sophomore in the singles lineup in every match of the season.

Despite the youth, the team finished 8-4 at home, which included a four-match winning streak from March 7-20. Two Hornets were named all-Big Sky Conference, including sophomore Henry Lamchinniah (1st Team) and freshman Martin Duris (Honorable Mention).

A local tennis pro, Martinez has 26 years of coaching experience. He has been a tennis pro in the Sacramento area since 2003 with stops at the Gold River Racquet Club (2003-07), Natomas Racquet Club (2008-16), and the Sutter Lawn Tennis Club (2017-pres.). That includes the Director of Tennis at both Natomas and Sutter Lawn.

Martinez had a playing career that spanned being ranked as one of the top juniors in the nation to earning doubles points on the ATP Tour. He also played collegiately at American River College and Foothill College between 1999 and 2001. A United States Tennis Academy (USTA) league captain between 2008-16, Martinez had an ATP doubles ranking as high as 789th in the world in 2015.

An ATP level, and USTA Tournament Director between 2008 and 2016, Martinez has been coaching in Northern California since 1999 (including a stop in the Bay Area early in his tenure).
