Eric Fremd joined the Sacramento State staff in July of 2015. Fremd oversees the Hornet multis & horizontal jumpers.
The 2018 season was another outstanding year for the Hornet horizontal jumps and multis. The outdoor season was highlighted by Darius Armstead becoming Sacramento State’s first NCAA first team All-American in the triple jump, after placing seventh at the national championships with a jump of 53-00.75. At the Big Sky Championships, the Hornets dominated the men’s and women’s horizontal jumps, scoring nearly half of the available points in the long and triple jumps. Emilia Del Hoyo led a first through fourth sweep in the women’s triple jump with teammates Brittany Patterson, Nasheedah Mu’Min and Nirie Boglino. Her winning jump of 41-02.50 moved her to fourth place all-time at Sac State. Darius Armstead defended is outdoor triple jump title from 2017. The men’s long jump saw four Hornets in the final, led by Cory Barger’s runner-up finish. In the final USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings of the outdoor season, both the Hornet men’s and women’s triple jumpers were ranked third in the NCCA Div. I. In total during the outdoor season, there was one NCAA All-American, six NCAA West Preliminary qualifiers, two Big Sky champions, 10 all-conference honors earned, and eight top-10 marks achieved.
Indoors, Emilia Del Hoyo earned Big Sky Conference MVP for her performance at the Big Sky Championship. She placed second in the triple jump, third in the pentathlon, fourth in the long jump, and seventh in the 60-hurdles, to earn a meet high 22 points. Jah Strange led a podium sweep in the men’s triple jump, with teammates Mohammed Abdullah and Darius Armstead. Strange also set the triple jump school record during the season with a mark of 51-03.50. Freshman Brittany Patterson led a 1-2 sweep with Del Hoyo in the women’s triple jump with a winning jump of 40-05.00. In total, there were two Big Sky champions, eight all-conference honors earned, and 11 top-10 marks achieved during the indoor season.
In 2017, the horizontal jumpers and multis had an outstanding and record-breaking year under Fremd's direction. Indoors, Darius Armstead broke the school record with a jump of 51-2 in route to winning the Big Sky title. Elizabeth Venzon jumped the second-best mark in school history to win the women's high jump title at 5-8. In total, there were two Big Sky champions, eight all-conference honors earned and 12 top-10 marks achieved during the indoor season.
Outdoors, the multis and men's horizontal jumpers swept the top of the podium at the Big Sky Championships. Elizabeth Venzon led a 1-2 finish with Kassandra Corrigan in the heptathlon, with scores of 5,322 and 5,163 points. Max Jette won the decathlon title with a score of 6,960 points. Michael Turner won the men's long jump with a best of 25-8, which moved him to second all-time at Sacramento State and ninth all-time in Big Sky history. Darius Armstead won the men's triple jump. During the season, he also set a new school record and moved to fifth in Big Sky history with a massive jump of 53-1.5. At the NCAA West Prelims, Cory Barger jumped a lifetime best of 25-3w to qualify to the NCAA National Championships Finals, where he would earn honorable mention All-America honors by placing 17th. In total, there were six NCAA West Prelims Qualifiers, four Big Sky champions, 10 all-conference honors earned, and 12 top-10 marks achieved during the outdoor season.
In the first year under Fremd's guidance, Corrigan broke the indoor pentathlon school record, with a score of 3,794 points. Throughout the year the multis accumulated five all-Big Sky honors and five Sacramento State top-10 marks.
Fremd came to Sacramento State after spending the two seasons as the head coach track & field coach at Yuba College. During his time at Yuba, the program saw its best seasons in over a decade. During the 2015 season the women's team won its first conference title in 15 years, by winning the Golden Valley Conference Championship, while the men's team had its highest placing in just as long by placing second. Yuba had 17 individual conference champions, qualified 18 athletes to the NorCal Championships, had six athletes place in the top-five at Nor-Cal Finals, and five advance to the State Meet. He was also named the 2015 GVC Women's Coach of the Year.
Prior to his time at Yuba, Fremd served as the horizontal jumps and assistant sprints/relays coach at Sacramento City College for 2 seasons. While at SCC, Fremd coached multiple JC All-Americans, conference champions, and SCC top-10 performers, highlighted by the school record 4x100m team that ran 39.88. Prior to SCC, Fremd spent one season as an assistant coach at Pomona-Pitzer College where he coached the sprinters and jumpers.
Fremd is an alumnus of Sacramento State earning his masters of science degree in kinesiology (sports performance) in 2013. Prior to graduate school, Fremd earned his bachelors of science degree in kinesiology from Cal State Northridge, while competing for their back-to-back Big West Championship track & field teams ('09, '10). Fremd also attended Sacramento City College, where he was a team captain for the 2007 State Championship Track & Field Team. Fremd holds a USTFCCCA Jump Events Specialist certification and a USATF Level 2 Sprints/Hurdles/Relays certification.
Fremd is married to his former CSUN teammate Crystal Fremd (formerly Spears). They have a son, Thomas Jalen (TJ) who is two years old.
