Baiba Celma was hired as an assistant coach at Sacramento State in August of 2016. Celma will primarily coach the high jump and will also work on the day-to-day operations of the program.

During the 2017 season, Celma coached a pair of Big Sky champions. At the indoor championships, Elizabeth Venzon jumped 5-08.00 to win the conference title and record the second best mark in school history. At the outdoor meet, Candice Dominguez tied the school record after successfully clearing 5-10.50. In all three Hornet women moved into the top six in school history during the outdoor season as Venzon (5-08.75) and Julia Grimm (5-08.00) joined Dominguez.

A former student-athlete with the Hornets, Celma served as a volunteer coach from 2012-16. In that capacity, she worked closely with the high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin, shot put and hurdles. Celma also assisted with the team’s strength and conditioning program.

Celma was the Big Sky champion in the heptathlon in 2012 after scoring 5,279 points. That total was the highest by a Hornet in 27 years and remains the second best mark in school history. She also earned all-Big Sky honors in the triple jump and javelin that year at the outdoor championships as well as the in the pentathlon during the indoor season. Her career best of 3,686 in the pentathlon is the third highest in program history.

The Piltene, Latvia native was part of eight Big Sky championship winning teams during her time at Sacramento State and also advanced to the NCAA West Regional in the triple jump.

She graduated from Sacramento State with a degree in kinesiology in 2013 and is currently pursuing a master’s in kinesiology.
