Program Description:
The objective for the Sacramento State Sports Medicine student internship is to provide opportunities to further expand knowledge and allow for learning hands-on skills that may be applied in any allied health profession. Internship candidates should be highly motivated individuals who have a drive to learn more about various health care professions including athletic training. Candidates should have a professional demeanor & appearance & have the willingness to work hard. Students will be mentored and supervised by staff athletic trainers that have the responsibility for the student-athletes' health and care. All students will receive frequent and explicit instruction throughout their time working in the program.
Program Learning Opportunities:
- Gain hands on experience using modalities such as Ultrasound, X-5, DMS, effleurage, & more
- Learn various taping techniques
- Learn how to take medical histories for a medical evaluation of an injury
- Assist/collaborate with athletic trainers to create rehab programs for athletes
- Create and attain learning goals during your time in the internship
- Assist Athletic Trainers with field set-up/break down for athletic practices and competitions
- Assist Athletic Trainers with hydration distribution during athletic practices and competitions
- Assist in the Athletic Training Facility with daily cleaning duties, supply stocking, and more.
Program Requirements:
- Must be a Sacramento State student.
- Should be able to work 3-5 days a week, 3-4 hours per day, with evening and weekend hours. Hours will vary on needs for the week/amount of student interns. (avg around 15-20 hrs. per week) .
- Work consecutive fall and spring semesters.
- Must be able to move athletic equipment and possess the ability to lift a minimum of 30 lbs.
- Must be CPR/AED & First Aid certified or be able to attain certification prior to start.
- Previous experience as a sports medicine aide in the high school/junior college setting is preferred but not required.
Application Procedure:
To apply for the internship program, students will need to complete an application via Handshake through the Sacramento State website no later than the end of the fall semester, in order to be considered for next years program. Link provided below.
Once applications have been reviewed, students will be invited to observe during the months of January & February. Select students will then be interviewed by the program directors during the month of March. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the program by the end of March/beginning of April. Students who are accepted into the program will then complete a 4 week orientation schedule during the month of April to prepare them for the start of the program the following August/September.
