MISSOULA, Mont. -- Montana won two doubles matches, and six singles matches on the way to a 7-0 victory over Sacramento State on Sunday morning at Peak Racquet Club.
For the second straight match (including Friday at Montana State), the Hornets were playing indoors. Sacramento State dropped to 10-11 overall and 1-5 in the Big Sky Conference. Montana, the conference's second place team, improved to 12-7 and 5-1 in league.
In reality, this morning's match did not mean much in the conference standings for Sacramento State. The top six teams in the eight-member conference qualify for the Big Sky Tournament in Phoenix on April 23-25.
The Hornets have just one match left in the regular season, and its the biggest of the season. That will come on Thursday at home vs. Portland State at 1 p.m. Should the Hornets win that match, they would assume the No. 6 seed at the Big Sky Tournament. The loser of Thursday's match will see its season come to an end.
Sacramento State's singles lineup today featured three freshmen and three sophomores, as the Hornets were playing their final regular season road match. Sophomore
Miles Whitehead took his match to a third set super tiebreak at No. 6 before falling.
Nick Bowles lost at No. 2 by a 7-5, 7-5 score, and saw his five-match singles winning streak come to a close.
The Hornets have been good at home, as the team is 7-4 on campus. Portland State (6-13, 2-4) will be seeking its first road win of the season (0-12).
