SEGERSTROM TIED FOR SEVENTH AFTER FIRST DAY OF OREGON STATE INVITATIONAL

Men's golf has roller-coaster day to sit in 10th place

CORVALLIS, Ore. — The first and second rounds of the Oregon State Invitational had polar-opposite results for the Sacramento State men's golf team on Monday at Trysting Tree GC. The Hornets were 7-under after the opening round and held a 1-stroke lead in the team standings. The second round proved to be far more difficult as Sacramento State was 11-over leaving the team in 10th place heading into Tuesday's final round.

The Hornets got off to a great start, finishing the first round at 7-under par which is tied for the eighth-lowest mark in an opening round in school history. Zach Matzke matched his career best with a round of 67 (4-under). Matzke started on the 14th hole with a par and recorded his only bogey of the round on the par-4 15th. He remained at 1-over until a birdie on the par-4 third. He moved below par with a birdie on the par-5 fifth and continued his run with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 9-11.

PJ Segerstrom parred his first eight holes before closing the first round at 3-under. Segerstrom broke through with a birdie on the par-5 fifth and added birdies on Nos. 6 and 8 before a bogey on the par-4 ninth. He moved to 3-under with a birdie on the par-4 11th but followed with a bogey on No. 12 before ended his round with a birdie on the par-5 15th.

Jai Bahl had the best start for the team as he birdied two of his first four holes (Nos. 14 and 16). A bogey on No. 17 stopped the run and he stayed at 1-under until a birdie on No. 3. Following seven consecutive pars, Bahl birdied No. 11 and wrapped up the round with a bogey on No. 12.

Luke Price and Griffin Vaughan each shot 73 in the first round. Price, who was competing in his first collegiate round had one birdie and three bogeys while Vaughan had three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.

Segerstrom was 1-under in the second round to post the best score on the team by four shots. The third-year opened with a double bogey but worked his way back to 2-under with birdies on Nos. 18, 3, 4 and 5. A pair of bogeys left him even until he birdied the par-3 13th to get to 1-under. His 36-hole total of 68-70-138 ties him for seventh in the field and puts him four shots off the lead.

The Hornets also counted scores of 74 from Vaughan, 75 from Price and 76 from Bahl in the afternoon.

Eastern Washington followed an even team score in the first round with a total of 11-under in the second round to take a 1-stroke lead in the standings. Oregon and Oregon State are tied for second while Washington State (9-under) and Utah State (8-under) complete the top five. The Hornets are four shots clear of any team in 10th place out of the 12-team field.

The third round will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The Hornets will be paired with Utah State, Gonzaga and Cal State Fullerton and will start on holes Nos. 13-17.
