PHOENIX -- Sacramento State fell to Montana, 4-0, in the Big Sky Conference Tournament quarterfinal round on Thursday morning at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
The top six teams in the nine-member Big Sky qualifed for the three-day, single elimination event, and Sacramento State was the No. 6 seed and Montana the No. 3 seed. The Hornets (10-12) season comes to an end while Montana (16-6) will advance to tomorrow's semifinal round.
Sacramento State completed a season that saw the team use four freshmen and one sophomore in the singles lineup every match this year.
The Grizzlies defeated the Hornets in both matchups this year, which included a 5-2 win in Sacramento on March 7.
In today's matchup, Montana won at Nos. 2 and 3 to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. The Grizzlies then won at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 to secure the necessary four points for victory. Sacramento State's
Henry Lamchinniah (No. 1),
Martin Duris (No. 4) and
David Dai (No. 6) were each in the third set when the match was halted.
Five of the six singles matches were extremely tight, including
Gur Libal narrowly falling at No. 2 (6-4, 7-6), and
Nick Bowles dropping his match at No. 3 by a 7-5, 7-5 score.
Lamchinniah, a sophomore, played at No. 1 all season and was a unanimous first team all-Big Sky selection after finishing with a 14-5 singles record (6-2 vs. league opposition). Duris, a freshman, was an honorable mention all-league selection and finished the season with a 13-6 singles record (played at both Nos. 4 and 5).
Today was the Hornets' first neutral court match of the year. The team finished 8-4 at home, which included a 5-2 homestand from March 5-22.
