FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Luke Dugger recorded his second top-five finish at Sacramento State and tied for fourth place at the Ram Masters Invitational on Wednesday at Fort Collins Country Club. Dugger shot a 3-under par round of 67 and finished the tournament at 6-under par.
Sacramento State tied for seventh place as a team with rounds of 281-280-282-843 to end at 3-over par. The Hornets were 1-stroke back of Cal State Fullerton which had the best team score among the five Big West Conference teams in the field. Host Colorado State pulled ahead of Utah Tech to win the team title. The Rams were 22-under and had a four-shot cushion at the top of the leaderboard. Long Beach State and Colorado were each 9-under par to tie for third place while Rice took fifth at 8-under.
Dugger began the day with birdies on three of the first four holes. He added birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to get to 5-under in the round before a double-bogey on the par-3 ninth. Dugger played the back nine even with a pair of birdies and bogeys. His total of 66-71-67-204 was one stroke off his 54-hole career best and is tied for the third-lowest in program history.
Freshman
Max Thomas tied for 24th place at the tournament behind a final-round 71 to finish at 1-over par. Thomas birdied Nos. 2 and 3 and remained at 2-under until a bogey on the par-4 eighth. Bogeys on Nos. 10 and 14 took him to 1-over but he was able to get back even with a birdie on the par-4 16th. Following a par, Thomas bogeyed No. 18 to close his round.
The team also counted a pair of 72s in the third round from
Zach Mate and
Patrick Dumag. Mate had an identical front nine as Thomas and was 3-over on the back nine. Dumag was 3-over at the turn with a birdie on No. 5 and four bogeys on the front side of the course. He was 1-under on the back with the help of birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 15 to balance two bogeys. Mate tied for 47th while Dumag was 78th in the tournament.
Gabriel Smith tied for 51st place and shot 73 in the third round. Smith was even through nine holes with three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. He was 3-over on the back nine with a birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey.
Valparaiso's Anthony Delisanti maintained his lead to become the medalist. Delisanti shot 67-63-67-197 to win the event by four strokes.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Oct. 14-16 at Stockton Country Club.
